{"id":294632,"date":"2023-07-13T18:40:31","date_gmt":"2023-07-13T23:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=294632"},"modified":"2023-07-18T21:37:05","modified_gmt":"2023-07-19T02:37:05","slug":"highly-unreliable-research-sexologist-alfred-kinsey","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/highly-unreliable-research-sexologist-alfred-kinsey\/","title":{"rendered":"Built on Sand: Sexologist Alfred Kinsey&#8217;s &#8216;research&#8217; came from deviants and sex offenders"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><em>This article is part two in a Live Action News series about Alfred Kinsey and the impact of his claims on our culture. <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/unmasking-alfred-kinsey-sexual-revolution\/\">Read Part One<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/alfred-kinsey-collaborated-nazi-whitewashed-crimes-children\/\">Part Three<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/alfred-kinsey-pedophilic-research-school-sex-ed\/\">Part Four<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">WARNING<\/span>: Content may be inappropriate for younger readers.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As noted in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/unmasking-alfred-kinsey-sexual-revolution\/\">part one<\/a> of this series, there are many legitimate criticisms to be leveled against \u201cFather of the Sexual Revolution\u201d Alfred Kinsey\u2019s books, &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Behavior in the Human Male&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Behavior in the Human Female<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.&#8221; Specifically, aspects of Kinsey\u2019s methodology have been called into question \u2013 including his sampling methods, his statistical analysis, and his interviewing technique. Kinsey\u2019s books have also been criticized because they invoke the authority of science (which, as we\u2019ll see, is not science at all) to promote a radical, revolutionary sexual agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey himself stated: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[R]emember that even authorities sometimes publish things that aren\u2019t so \u2026 [W]hat experts believe to be true may be found incorrect upon further investigation.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though he almost certainly did not intend these words to apply to himself or his work, an examination of the methodology behind his books shows that they, in fact, do.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>SKEWED SAMPLING\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most obvious methodological problem with Kinsey\u2019s research lies within the sample population itself. Kinsey biographer James H. Jones writes that, because Kinsey\u2019s sample was \u201cfar from random,\u201d its reliability was \u201cproblematic.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2] \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey\u2019s sample was not just non-random \u2013 it was deliberately skewed to favor unusual individuals. Jones notes that Kinsey \u201cwent to great lengths\u201d to obtain histories from people with non-traditional sexual histories and habits, which \u201cundermine[d] the representative quality of his sample.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And who were these unusual individuals? Jones writes that Kinsey interviewed too many prisoners, including and <em>especially<\/em> sex offenders. He also interviewed too many college students, and \u201ctoo many [people] he knew in advance to be gay.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey co-author Paul Gebhard stated that, in their prison-based interviews, the Kinsey team \u201chad no plan of sampling \u2013 we simply sought out sex offenders, and, after a time, avoided the more common types of offense (e.g. statutory rape) and directed our efforts toward the rarer types.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, Kinsey sought out sexual deviants and gleaned his research primarily from them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although these individuals were clearly far from \u201caverage,\u201d Kinsey used data obtained from them to make generalizations about the American population as a whole, effectively representing it as far more sexually promiscuous than it actually was.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another problem with Kinsey\u2019s sampling method is that he relied on volunteers. Only a certain type of individual is willing to be interviewed about his or her sex life \u2014 a problem of which Kinsey was aware.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Noted psychologist Abraham Maslow \u2013 architect of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplypsychology.org\/maslow.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hierarchy of Needs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> theory \u2013 conducted research on what he termed \u201cvolunteer-error,\u201d and stated that \u201cany study in which data are obtained from volunteers will\u2026 show a falsely high percentage of non-virginity, masturbation, promiscuity, homosexuality, etc.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">8]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a paper co-authored by James M. Sakoda, Maslow concluded that people \u201cwith histories of unconventional sexual behavior would volunteer for [Kinsey\u2019s] sex studies, while those whose histories were conventional would generally not participate.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shortly after the &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Male&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">volume\u2019s release, anthropologist Geoffrey Gorer said that, because Kinsey relied on volunteers at college lectures and \u201con personal introductions from interested individuals \u2026 his population is completely distorted\u201d and \u201cstatistically invalid[.]\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10] <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noted statistician John W. Tukey said that it was doubtful \u201cwhether useful and significant generalizations about the population as a whole can actually be inferred from the kind of samples which Dr. Kinsey has used.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">11]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>SHADY STATISTICS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Neither Kinsey nor any of his co-authors were statisticians, and it showed. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only was Kinsey \u201cuncritical and at times even careless about the data he collected,\u201d according to Jones, but his reporting of that data often didn\u2019t add up.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">12]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the data on the so-called \u201cAdult Partners\u201d of pre-adolescent girls presented in a table at the bottom of page 118 of his &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Female&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> volume adds to 107%.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">13] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reported sample sizes are often inconsistent in both volumes; for example, in the dedication of the &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Male&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> volume, Kinsey thanks \u201cthe twelve thousand persons who have contributed to these data,\u201d whereas a map on page 5 suggests a sample size of over 21,000.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">14]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jones writes: <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1950, half a dozen scholarly reviews focused on the statistical and methodological aspects of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Behavior in the Human Male<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and most were critical. \u2026 [A] consensus was building that [Kinsey\u2019s] work was badly flawed from a statistical standpoint.<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And distinguished statistician W. Allen Wallis concluded: \u201cThe inadequacies in statistics are such that it is impossible to say that the book has much value[.]\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">16]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>INTERVIEWING ISSUES<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey relied on in-person interviews to gather data, which is problematic for a number of reasons. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">John Romano, then-professor of psychiatry at the University of Cincinnati\u2019s College of Medicine, said that people resist revealing truths about their sexual histories as a result of \u201ccultural forces,\u201d and because of this, \u201cserious distortions\u201d may result. He added: \u201cEmotional blind spots in the interviewer are [also] frequent sources of distortion,\u201d concluding, \u201cI am afraid that my impression leads me to believe that [Kinsey\u2019s] study consists of accurate recording of inaccurate data.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jones reveals that Kinsey placed the \u201cburden of denial\u201d on interviewees, asking loaded questions: \u201cFor example, instead of asking people if they had ever masturbated, he would inquire how old they were when they started masturbating.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kinsey also relied on his own subjective instincts to determine whether people were being truthful \u2013 everything was filtered through his personal, far-from-unbiased lens.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">19]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s more, Kinsey co-author Paul Gebhard confirmed that interviews were often coerced.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Along the same lines, two nurses interviewed by Kinsey charged that \u201che could provoke any answer that he might want.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>AN ALARMING AGENDA<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It appeared Kinsey was actually seeking some kind of so-called \u2018scientific data\u2019 that would absolve him of his guilt feelings about his own unusual sexuality by \u2018proving\u2019 it to be \u2018normal.\u2019 Kinsey had \u201ca strong need for self-justification,\u201d according to biographer Jones.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">22]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> But it is flawed to assert that numbers render behavior normal and\/or that behaviors are moral by their mere existence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Norman Vincent Peale, author of &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Power of Positive Thinking<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; said: \u201cNo matter how many murderers there are, murder will never be normal.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, in its review of &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Behavior in the Human Female<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,&#8221; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0magazine stated, \u201c[I]t often seems to culminate in propaganda for certain sociological views: that what is common in sexual behavior must be right[.]\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine stated, \u201cKinsey\u2019s work expresses and strengthens an attitude that can be dangerous: the idea that there is morality in numbers.\u201d[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25]<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>MEDIA MANIPULATION<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite all of these flaws, the Kinsey \u201cfindings\u201d were parroted and promoted by an all-too-eager press whose articles Kinsey essentially censored in order to make them conform to his agenda; prior to publication, mainstream reviews of the &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Behavior&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> books were submitted to Kinsey <em>for his own approval and revision<\/em>, entirely corrupting their objectivity.[<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26]<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Jones, Kinsey did not restrict his manipulation to members of the mainstream press, but extended it to scholarly authors, as well. He reportedly \u201cdevise[d] a way to corrupt a system of peer review designed to operate without input from authors\u201d by getting experts \u201cin various fields\u201d to \u201cvolunteer to review the book,\u201d thereby \u201cplant[ing]\u2026 many reviews in academic journals.\u201d Essentially, he selected his own biased reviewers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, Kinsey\u2019s \u2018findings\u2019 were foisted upon an unsuspecting public which naively accepted anything presented as \u2018science.\u2019 Even the most shocking claims were swallowed whole and digested by an overly trusting and unquestioning culture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The damage done by this wholesale acceptance of Kinsey\u2019s pseudoscience has been most pronounced in the effects it has had upon children, as will be discussed in the next installment of this exclusive Live Action News series.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 &#8211; Alfred C.
