Alfred C. Kinsey has often been described as the \u201c<\/span>Father of the Sexual Revolution<\/span><\/a>.\u201d His writings, “<\/span>Sexual Behavior in the Human Male<\/span>” and “<\/span>Sexual Behavior in the Human Female”<\/span> may not be single-handedly responsible for that cultural shift, but they most certainly watered and fertilized the soil in which the seeds had been planted.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These books hit the American public like bombshells when they were released in 1948 and 1953, respectively, and immediately became cultural phenomena.[1]<\/span>\u00a0Kinsey\u2019s books and the conclusions they presented as scientific fact changed America and the world beyond.<\/span><\/p>\n

But Kinsey\u2019s conclusions were not based on true science, and were in fact driven by Kinsey\u2019s own personal demons and sexual obsessions. The methodology behind Kinsey\u2019s \u201cresearch\u201d was deeply flawed, and his \u201cscience\u201d was far from objective. Kinsey biographer James H. Jones writes that\u00a0 \u201c[Kinsey\u2019s] research sprang from a private agenda shaped by personal politics,\u201d adding, \u201cDespite his claim of cool disinterest, Kinsey was nothing of the sort. He had definite ideas about how people should behave sexually, and these preferences were only too transparent in his writing.\u201d[2]<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our culture \u2013 and especially our children \u2013 have been deeply affected by Kinsey\u2019s work, as this exclusive Live Action News series will explore.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

KINSEY THE MAN<\/b><\/p>\n

Kinsey was perhaps not thinking of himself when he said: \u201cThe inside story [behind] the journal and newspaper articles is, in many instances, much more important than the material that was actually published. The backgrounds of the individuals who have done the writing very often supply the key to the attitude in the published article.\u201d[3]<\/span><\/p>\n

These words, however, nonetheless apply to Kinsey and his work: to truly understand his writings, one must understand the man himself.<\/span><\/p>\n

Although he presented himself to the public as a straight-laced family man driven by purely scientific motives \u2013 an image promoted and amplified by an uncritical press \u2013 this was a mere caricature designed to shield the secrets of a deeply disturbed man and to provide a veneer of respectability to research that was methodologically flawed, not to mention disturbingly unethical.[4]<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Jones, Kinsey \u201cused science to combat his guilt feelings\u201d over his own sexual inclinations, which included homosexuality, exhibitionism, masochism, and an obsession with masturbation \u2014 the latter two often in combination. Shockingly, Kinsey went so far as to circumcise himself with a pocket knife and without anesthesia in his effort to obtain pleasure through pain.[<\/span>5]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In his biography, Jones paints Kinsey as a tortured man who ultimately acted upon his own personal sexual obsessions by entering sex research \u2013 a decision that also served as an act of rebellion against his domineering, staunchly conservative father (whom he despised).<\/span><\/p>\n

SCIENCE SUPPLANTS RELIGION<\/b><\/p>\n

Kinsey was raised in a devout Methodist home and, by all accounts, was deeply religious as a young person.[<\/span>6] <\/span>However, he seems to have lost his faith while attending Harvard as a graduate student in entomology, and he eventually emerged as a fiercely anti-religious zealot.[<\/span>7] <\/span>His daughter Joan stated that her father had \u201can active, almost on occasions aggressive dislike for religion.\u201d[<\/span>8]<\/span><\/p>\n

Kinsey believed scientists should replace priests, ministers, and theologians as the primary influencers of our culture. He \u201cleft [Harvard] believing that biologists should become social engineers\u201d who crafted both public policy and private morality.[<\/span>9]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

ABUSE OF ACADEMIC AUTHORITY<\/b><\/p>\n

Following his time at Harvard, Kinsey became a professor of zoology and entomology at Indiana University, where he continued the research on gall wasps he\u2019d begun at Harvard.[<\/span>10] <\/span>\u00a0His obsession with sex was evident even then.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to Jones, Kinsey engaged in lewd correspondence with many of his favorite students, and apparently had homosexual relationships with some of them.[<\/span>11] <\/span>On fieldwork trips with graduate students, he would reportedly \u201cgo naked\u201d and would urinate in front of students.[<\/span>12] <\/span>He would also reportedly direct conversations with his students toward sex on a regular basis.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe discussions seemed to begin without any logical justification,\u201d Jones states, quoting one of Kinsey\u2019s former students as saying, \u201cHe\u2019d just bring [sex up] right out of the blue.\u201d[<\/span>13] <\/span>Kinsey was \u201cexplicit,\u201d Jones continues.[<\/span>14] <\/span>He discussed \u201cpositioning and the whole bit,\u201d according to the same former student.[<\/span>15] <\/span>\u201cKinsey not only lauded masturbation as healthy\u201d on these trips, \u201cbut offered a detailed discussion on how to masturbate efficiently and effectively,\u201d Jones writes.[<\/span>16]<\/span> \u201c[T]o me,\u201d said a former student, \u201cit wasn\u2019t exactly appropriate.\u201d[<\/span>17]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According<\/span><\/a> to RAINN, the nation\u2019s largest anti-sexual violence organization, this could be classified as grooming behavior.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the diary of another former student, it is highly likely that Kinsey engaged in sexual activities with some students on these trips.[<\/span>18] <\/span>Doubtless because of this dubious behavior, one student\u2019s wife \u201chated Alfred C. Kinsey,\u201d according to Jones.[<\/span>19] <\/span>\u201cHe was a dirty old man,\u201d she said.[<\/span>20]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Kinsey was \u201cmanipulative and aggressive, a man who abused his professional authority and betrayed his trust as a teacher,\u201d Jones states.[<\/span>21] <\/span>\u201cKinsey\u2019s behavior with his graduate students <\/span>showed the risks a sex-obsessed man would take in exchange for \u2026 erotic satisfaction,\u201d Jones continues, adding, \u201cOnly a desperate man, indeed a compulsive man, would have taken such risks.\u201d[<\/span>22]<\/span><\/p>\n

FROM GALL WASPS TO PEOPLE<\/b><\/p>\n

In 1938, Kinsey shifted the focus of his work from gall wasps to human sexuality.[<\/span>23] <\/span>His domineering style, however, remained unchanged. Jones notes: \u201cSomething in [Kinsey\u2019s] personality made him want to control everyone he met\u201d \u2013 not unlike the father he so detested.[<\/span>24]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Using his position as the primary professor for Indiana University\u2019s marriage preparation course, Kinsey began to collect \u2013 often by employing significant pressure \u2013 the sexual histories of his students via personal interviews.[<\/span>25]<\/span> By 1939, he had begun collecting the histories of people belonging to various sexual subcultures, and by the early 1940\u2019s he had collected numerous histories from prisoners \u2014\u00a0including and especially sex offenders.[<\/span>26]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Long before he had significant data to draw upon, Kinsey was declaring in his marriage course lectures \u201cthat nearly all of the so-called sexual perversions fall within the range of biologic normality.\u201d[<\/span>27] <\/span>All of his subsequent work was geared toward \u2018proving\u2019 that point. \u201cDespite his claims to scientific objectivity, Kinsey sounded very much like a man with a mission, a secular evangelist,\u201d writes Jones.[<\/span>28]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

It wouldn\u2019t be long before Kinsey authored his own sexual bible, in two volumes: “<\/span>Sexual Behavior in the Human Male”<\/span> in 1948, and, in 1953, “<\/span>Sexual Behavior in the Human Female<\/span>.” Regarding these books, Jones states: \u201c[T]he academic and professional critics tended to raise one or more of the following criticisms: first, Kinsey was a poor statistician \u2026 second, his sampling technique was unrepresentative \u2026 third, his interview technique was faulty.\u201d[<\/span>29]<\/span> Jones also accuses Kinsey of having a hidden agenda to \u201cpromote[] [sexual] permissiveness under the guise of science.\u201d[<\/span>30]\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jones writes that Kinsey \u201ctook tolerance to extremes,\u201d particularly \u201cwith regard to incest and child molestation.\u201d[<\/span>31]<\/span> He \u201crefus[ed] to acknowledge that certain sexual behaviors were at once antisocial and pathological.\u201d[<\/span>32] <\/span>Furthermore, Kinsey did not seem to realize that mainstream sexual morality \u201cmight involve something more than mean-spirited attempts to deprive people of pleasure, that [it] might in fact serve beneficial purposes[.]\u201d[<\/span>33]<\/span><\/p>\n

All of these are legitimate criticisms, which will be discussed in greater detail in forthcoming installments of this exclusive Live Action News series.<\/span><\/p>\n
