{"id":294240,"date":"2023-07-06T12:37:05","date_gmt":"2023-07-06T17:37:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=294240"},"modified":"2023-07-05T15:48:28","modified_gmt":"2023-07-05T20:48:28","slug":"mizzou-adults-intellectual-developmental-disabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/mizzou-adults-intellectual-developmental-disabilities\/","title":{"rendered":"New college program for people with disabilities was the brainchild of a special needs dad"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The University of Missouri (Mizzou) College of Education and Human Development <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.missouri.edu\/2023\/01\/mu-launches-residential-program-for-students-with-intellectual-development-disabilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently announced<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the upcoming launch of\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.missouri.edu\/special-education\/projects-centers\/paws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PAWS \u2014 Preparing Adults for Work and Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201ca residential program for post-secondary students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a story in the summer 2023 issue of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/embodiedmag.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embodied magazine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PAWS was the brainchild of Mizzou spokesman Chrisitan Basi, whose 16-year-old daughter Julianna has Down syndrome. Back in 2018, after Julianna\u2019s cheer squad performed on the Mizzou campus, Basi approached the special education department chair and asked, \u201cWould you be interested in starting a college program for students with intellectual disabilities?\u201d He was met with an enthusiastic \u201cyes!\u201d Five years later, the PAWS program, which is patterned after <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umsl.edu\/succeed\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Missouri-St. Louis\u2019 Succeed Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is ready for primetime.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-294255 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-PAWS-program.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"606\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-PAWS-program.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-PAWS-program-300x152.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-PAWS-program-700x354.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-PAWS-program-768x388.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/screenshot-PAWS-program-500x253.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the PAWS <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mailmissouri.sharepoint.com\/sites\/MUCEDUCStrategicCommunications-Ogrp\/Shared%20Documents\/Forms\/AllItems.aspx?id=%2Fsites%2FMUCEDUCStrategicCommunications%2DOgrp%2FShared%20Documents%2FMizzou%20Ed%20Website%2FMizzou%20Ed%20Website%2FWebsite%20documents%2FSPED%2FPAWS%20Forms%2FPAWS%5FFrequently%5FAsked%5FQuestions%5F40%5F%2Epdf&amp;parent=%2Fsites%2FMUCEDUCStrategicCommunications%2DOgrp%2FShared%20Documents%2FMizzou%20Ed%20Website%2FMizzou%20Ed%20Website%2FWebsite%20documents%2FSPED%2FPAWS%20Forms&amp;p=true&amp;ga=1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">application<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cPAWS Students will take a combination of PAWS Courses exploring areas of independent living, academic and work success, and social and community connections, as well as MU courses connected to their individualized goals. Through the exploration of their skills and interests, PAWS students will have the option to seek out volunteer and paid work.\u201d The program will offer a blend of for-credit college courses and life skills courses, with a heavier emphasis placed on learning the life skills necessary for independent living and gainful employment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PAWS program <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/mizzou-launches-new-program-for-students-with-intellectual-disabilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will begin<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">during the fall 2023 semester. The initial capacity will be four students, and each student will be enrolled in the program for two years. PAWS director <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.missouri.edu\/person\/maggie-center\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maggie Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> commented to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecollegefix.com\/mizzou-launches-new-program-for-students-with-intellectual-disabilities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The College Fix<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cFeedback from the Mizzou community and from interested students\/families has been that people are excited that this program is getting started.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PAWS program may be financially out of reach for some students with intellectual disabilities and their families. Participants will pay an additional $7000 for the program over and above an estimated $29,066 for traditional undergraduate tuition, room and board, and related fees.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center confirmed plans for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/education.missouri.edu\/special-education\/projects-centers\/paws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">PAWS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to become an accredited comprehensive transition and postsecondary program (CTP), which the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/eligibility\/requirements\/intellectual-disabilities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.S. Department of Education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regulates and defines as, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a degree, certificate, or nondegree program that is offered by a college or career school and approved by the U.S. Department of Education.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the Department of Education, CTP programs are intended to \u201cto support students with intellectual disabilities who want to continue academic, career, and independent living instruction to prepare for gainful employment.\u201d At present, 40 states have certified CTP programs. A complete list is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/studentaid.gov\/understand-aid\/eligibility\/requirements\/intellectual-disabilities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Center spoke to the need to integrate adults with Down syndrome or other intellectual or developmental disabilities into the college campus community at large.
