Historically, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/texas-high-school-pregnant-students-haven\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/baylor-university-scholarship-pregnant-parenting-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">college students<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been particularly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/sacredness-sisters-of-life-college-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vulnerable to abortion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to their age, lack of involvement from the father, lack of support from parents or friends, and\/or changes to their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/love-both-students-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">academic studies <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pregnant-college-brittany-babies-goals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plans for the future<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a post-Roe America, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maternity-home-restore-relationships-beat-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maternity homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across the country along with some religiously affiliated college campuses are ensuring <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/colleges-universities-pregnant-parenting-students\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young moms and families feel supported like never before<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On-campus programs for pregnant and parenting college students<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leaving behind the vestiges of shame or scandal that may have characterized institutional attitudes (and responses) to unplanned pregnancy in the past, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/mtmary.edu\/campuslife\/housing\/single-moms-and-children-on-campus-living.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">religiously affiliated colleges <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/frc.nd.edu\/pregnancy-support\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">universities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are increasingly recognizing the heroic generosity demonstrated by young college students who choose life in less-than-ideal circumstances. These schools are <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/colleges-universities-pregnant-parenting-students\/\">directly addressing<\/a> the needs of pregnant and parenting students<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A recent EWTN News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=0sBjkpfOP0M\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 64 Catholic colleges and universities <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/254378\/moms-on-campus-what-are-catholic-colleges-doing-to-help-students-facing-unexpected-pregnancies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that many now support pregnant and parenting students via a range of services, including \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tuition breaks, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/single-mothers-catholic-university-residential-community\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">special housing arrangements<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dedicated lactation rooms, \u2018expectant mother\u2019 parking spaces, and even free babysitting.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the survey response rate was low at just 26.5%, of the 17 responding institutions, the Catholic News Agency reported that:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fifteen of these 17 schools (88%) allowed pregnant students to remain in the dorms with the remaining two colleges offering off-campus housing options.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seven schools (41%) had specialized housing options to accommodate a pregnant mother or a mother with a young child.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eight schools (47%) offered scholarships solely dedicated to pregnant or parenting students.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eleven schools (64%) had lactation rooms or designated spaces for that purpose.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Five schools (29%) offered on-campus child care.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fourteen schools (82%) had additional campus resources available for pregnant or parenting students, such as expectant mother parking, counseling services, and free baby supplies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The survey highlighted the most comprehensive programs, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/miravia.org\/college-residence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Belmont Abbey College\u2019s<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/campus-maternity-home-support-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MiraVia on-campus residential program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Catholic University of America\u2019s(CUA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/catholic-university-s-guadalupe-project-offers-a-post-dobbs-radical-welcome-to-campus-moms-and-families\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guadalupe Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, University of Mary\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/mothers-on-campus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Teresa of Calcutta Community for Mothers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Ave Maria University\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/ave-maria-university-helps-student-parents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus Care<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Belmont Abbey College<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News previously provided in-depth coverage of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/campus-maternity-home-support-pregnant\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MiraVia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in North Carolina, an \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on-campus residential home at Belmont Abbey College\u201d that accepts residents from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> school, be it a trade school, four-year institution, etc. MiraVia can house 15 women and their children at any given time, and residents can stay until their child\u2019s second birthday. Residents who attend Belmont Abbey College receive free tuition, an $18,500 value annually.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/target-petition\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=lan_website&amp;utm_content=target_petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-292702\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Target petition\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-768x198.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-500x129.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Catholic University of America (CUA)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aspects of CUA\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/catholic-university-s-guadalupe-project-offers-a-post-dobbs-radical-welcome-to-campus-moms-and-families\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guadalupe Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include lactation rooms around campus, designated parking spots for expectant mothers, maternity clothes at the university\u2019s clothing exchange, and baby items in the university\u2019s food pantry for students in need. All over campus, posters and stickers with QR codes raise awareness of the resources available to pregnant and parenting students \u201cto drill home that message of support and \u2018we\u2019ll walk with you. Life is a gift. And, we\u2019re here with you,\u2019\u201d according to Jennie Lichter, the university\u2019s Deputy General Counsel.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Catholic university <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.catholicmatch.com\/articles\/is-sex-before-marriage-a-sin\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">advocates for sex within the context of marriage only<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but Lichter was clear that pregnant students would not be penalized. She commented, \u201cIn a sense, that seems obvious, right? But in a moment of panic or something that\u2019s experienced as a moment of crisis, we just didn\u2019t want there to be any question in the minds of any student on this campus that they would need to be hesitant to seek help and support from the university for any reason.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One expectant student expressed her gratitude for CUA\u2019s approach. She said, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I really appreciate that we\u2019ve put all these things in place to make these students feel safe. We\u2019re not ostracizing them \u2014 we\u2019re embracing them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>University of Mary (UMary)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/commentaries\/walking-the-walk-with-young-moms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UMary<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/mothers-on-campus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Teresa of Calcutta Community for Mothers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just five months ago, and already two students and their babies have benefited. Participants receive free room and board, an $8,000 value annually, and UMary staff assist them with securing tuition assistance from governmental or other programs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Katie, one of the mothers, noted how much living on campus with her peers helped maintain the college experience she so values. She also loves the easy access to spiritual support, noting \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any time of the night, I can walk upstairs and go to the chapel and go to adoration. I just love it.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UMary also offers a volunteer babysitting program staffed by fellow college students, and enables Katie to attend social events, not just classes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=1&amp;v=4HzBQ2Gg9NE&amp;embeds_referring_euri=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ncregister.com%2F&amp;embeds_referring_origin=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ncregister.com&amp;source_ve_path=Mjg2NjY&amp;feature=emb_logo\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angelina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the other program participant, is equally grateful for and complimentary of the opportunities she\u2019s received. She transferred to UMary during the spring semester from a Texas college specifically to join the program just weeks after giving birth to her son Augustine. She called it, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">definitely a light at the end of the tunnel for me.\u201d Thanks to the support she\u2019s received, she continues to pursue her dream to become a nurse.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ave Maria University (Ave)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like UMary, AMU\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/ave-maria-university-helps-student-parents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Campus Care<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">program features student volunteer babysitters and on-campus living arrangements for expecting female students. Campus Care was spearheaded by an Ave student whose roommate became unexpectedly pregnant. At first, the program simply offered free rides to a local pregnancy resource center. It&#8217;s since expanded to accommodate the needs of pregnant and parenting students, for material resources like diapers and baby clothes \u2014\u00a0but especially for community, meaning welcome from other students and faculty as well as camaraderie with other pregnant and parenting students and young families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary Pogasic, a recent Ave graduate who benefited from Campus Care, celebrated the program. She told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/features\/ave-maria-university-helps-student-parents\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Catholic Register<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese people are really living their pro-life beliefs by saying, \u2018We\u2019re not just going to pray for the end of abortion or go stand at abortion clinics\u2019; while those things are incredible, they\u2019re showing that \u2018We still care, and we still are going to help with and support these parents after they make that decision and after they bring that life into this world.\u2019\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maternity homes<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many women experiencing a crisis pregnancy outside the college setting have also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/moms-praising-work-maternity-homes-resources\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">benefited<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from wraparound support tailored to their needs for housing (potentially of themselves plus older children), job training, parenting education, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/ohio-maternity-home-moms-recovering-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">addiction recovery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (offered by<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maternity-homes-women-children-need\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> some maternity homes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and more. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sgpmollahome.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Gianna and Pietro Molla Maternity Home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, located in Warsaw, North Dakota (and named for an Italian Catholic couple who rejected abortion after wife Gianna received a cancer diagnosis while expecting their fourth child), opened in 2004. It welcomes pregnant and new moms of any age, striving to fulfill its mission of caring for \u201cone mother, one baby, one family at a time.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geianna Meade, the first baby born at the home, told<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=F34KiVuvNDU\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EWTN Pro-Life Weekly host Prudence Robertson<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the difference the supportive staff and family environment made in her life. \u201cI got to have a family that I never would have had the opportunity to even encounter [otherwise]. My mom came here from a way different place, from a low place, where she was definitely struggling and would have been struggling. I probably would have ended up on a same path as her, I\u2019m sure. But coming here, getting to see everyone, and them really just teaching me how to live my life has really helped.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/media\/maternity-homes-across-country-give-women-courage-become-mothers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fox News story<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> additionally spotlighted Mary\u2019s Shelter in Fredericksburg, Virginia; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bethlehemhouseomaha.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bethlehem House<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maternity-home-restore-relationships-beat-addiction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> featured by Live Action News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in April), in Omaha, Nebraska; and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.paulstefanhome.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Stefan Foundation<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home in Orange, Virginia.
