Instead, the embryos were created using embryonic stem cells. Dr. David Prentice, Ph.D., a stem cell expert with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charlotte Lozier Institute<\/a>, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.cbn.com\/news\/world\/no-mom-no-dad-scientists-create-synthetic-human-embryos-using-stem-cells\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBN News<\/a> that the research is a &#8220;real call for concern.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/health\/article-12195963\/Synthetic-human-embryos-scientific-breakthrough.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Daily Mail<\/a>, Professor Magdalena Zernicka-Goetz, a fellow at the University of Cambridge, explained, &#8220;We can create human embryo-like models by the reprogramming of [embryonic stem] cells.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/science\/2023\/jun\/14\/synthetic-human-embryos-created-in-groundbreaking-advance\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> reports that the &#8220;synthetic&#8221; embryos &#8220;resemble those in the earliest stages of human development&#8221; and are being studied to try to understand the &#8220;impact of genetic disorders and the biological causes of recurrent miscarriage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">NEW &#8211; Synthetic human embryos made without eggs or sperm have been created in a &quot;scientific breakthrough.&quot; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/svNG9l5ySd\">https:\/\/t.co\/svNG9l5ySd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Disclose.tv (@disclosetv) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/disclosetv\/status\/1669096671836270592?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 14, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The embryos allegedly do not have beating hearts or the first stages of a brain, but do include cells that would form the placenta, yolk sac, and the continued development of the embryo.<\/p>\n<p>Because they were created using stem cells, the embryos are not protected by the 14-day rule which prohibits the cultivating of embryos in research beyond two weeks \u2014\u00a0allowing researchers a way to skirt the rule. Researchers are also not legally allowed to implant synthetic embryos in a womb.<\/p>\n<p>In September 2022, researchers led by Zernicka-Goetz, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biotech-firm-create-human-embryos-stem-cells\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> they had created mouse embryos using only stem cells and kept them alive long enough to <em>develop beating hearts, blood flow, and cerebral folds of the brain<\/em>. They were &#8220;95% similar to normal mouse embryos,&#8221; said Jacob Hanna, founder of the biotech firm Renewal Bio, which took part in the research.<\/p>\n<p>The next step was to begin making human embryos in the same manner, which they have now achieved.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/target-petition\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=lan_website&amp;utm_content=target_petition\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-292702\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Target petition\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-768x198.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized-500x129.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/LA23MAY_TargetPetition_resized.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though they have been deemed &#8220;synthetic,&#8221; the embryos are real. Dr. Prentice told Live Action News in 2022 that the organization has been tracking this research. He explained, \u201c[T]hey like to use the term \u2018synthetic,\u2019 but it\u2019s a dodge because they still want to play with embryos, so it\u2019s just distracting you with the terminology. The technique may be artificial or synthetic, but what\u2019s made \u2014 with beating hearts, nervous system, limbs, organs \u2014 is the real thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The goal of Renewal Bio is to reverse &#8220;declining birth rates and fast aging populations.&#8221; Hanna told MIT Technology Review that he wants to create human embryos as old as 50 days &#8212; nearly two months. The goal would be to create embryonic-stage versions of people that would be used to harvest tissue to lengthen a person&#8217;s life and improve their health as well as overcome infertility.
