(Created Equal<\/a>) Abortion advocates want\u00a0Ohio to be next up to enshrine elective abortion in the state\u2019s constitution<\/a>. Supporters claim it would only establish abortion until fetal viability, when the baby can survive outside her mother\u2019s womb with current technological assistance. But, while it is true the amendment\u00a0mentions<\/em>\u00a0viability, it allows for no meaningful protections for babies at that point. And, for those skeptical, one abortionist recently drilled this point home.<\/p>\n

First, consider the\u00a0proposed amendment\u2019s language related to viability<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, abortion may be prohibited after fetal viability. But in no case may such an abortion be prohibited if in the professional judgment of the pregnant patient\u2019s treating physician it is necessary to protect the pregnant patient\u2019s life or health.\u201d<\/p>\n

The language is clear on one point. This amendment would\u00a0create no protections for babies after viability<\/u>. At best, it would allow for such protections to be made. But on day one with this amendment, babies who can survive outside the womb would have no protections whatsoever from painful abortions.<\/p>\n

More troubling, however, is that even if abortion were prohibited after fetal viability, the amendment would give carte blanche to the mother\u2019s \u201ctreating physician\u201d to proceed with abortion if needed to protect the mother\u2019s \u201chealth.\u201d This raises two questions: First, who is the treating physician? And second, what is meant by health?<\/p>\n

The first question is as startling as it is simple to answer. Her treating physician is the abortionist.<\/p>\n

The definition of health, however, has not always been so clear.\u00a0Doe v Bolton<\/em>, companion case to the original\u00a0Roe v Wade<\/em>, defined a mother\u2019s \u201chealth\u201d related to abortion as not merely physical health but also much more: emotional health, her need to care for other dependents, and so on. This starts to shatter the impression that viability clauses provide any semblance of meaningful protection.<\/p>\n

But that final point just got worse thanks to the candor of one abortionist.<\/p>\n

\"Target<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery Pregnancy is a Health Issue.\u201d
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Atlantic\u00a0<\/em>recently\u00a0published a human interest piece on Colorado abortionist Warren Hern<\/a>. Among the dark gems was Hern\u2019s definition of fetal viability: \u201cHern, though, believes that the viability of a fetus is determined not by gestational age but by a woman\u2019s willingness to carry it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In other words, when asked whether a baby can survive outside the womb, Hern\u2019s metric is: Well, is the mom willing to carry the child?<\/p>\n

Such a definition is particularly troubling when the proposed amendment in Ohio\u2014which, if successful, will provide the pattern for more states to come\u2014leaves determining viability up to the abortionist.<\/p>\n

But what matters more than Hern\u2019s shocking definition of viability is how he gets there. Many will be tempted to isolate him as some forceps-slinging lone ranger of an abortionist\u2014off in a remote land where no other physicians dare to venture. But he\u2019s not an outlier. He\u2019s just willing to say out loud what others only think. (He\u2019s been slammed before for his candid description of D&E abortions as \u201cdestruction.\u201d See the same\u00a0Atlantic\u00a0<\/em>piece<\/a>. Abortion marketers straight off Madison Avenue prefer more gentle descriptors.)<\/p>\n

Explaining his ethic on abortion to\u00a0The Atlantic<\/a>, Hern says, \u201cThis is a grotesque conversation to many people \u2026 But this is a surgical procedure for a life-threatening condition.\u201d<\/p>\n

The surgical procedure, of course, is elective abortion. But one might wonder what is the \u201clife-threatening condition\u201d to which he refers. Pre-eclampsia? Ectopic pregnancy? Uterine cancer? No.<\/p>\n

He gladly tosses his cards on the table when\u00a0pressed by the journalist to clarify his position<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cSo what if a pregnant woman with no health issues comes to the clinic, say, at 30 weeks, what would you do?\u201d I asked Hern once. The question irked him.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cEvery pregnancy is a health issue!<\/u><\/strong>\u201d he said. \u201cThere\u2019s a certifiable risk of death from being pregnant, period.\u201d (emphasis added)<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So why does Hern dispense with any concern for the fetus when deciding whether the baby is viable? Because it\u2019s a non-issue. Every pregnancy by definition is life-threatening, and thus every abortion is justifiable, no matter how old the baby in the womb may be.<\/p>\n

Abortion Through All Nine Months<\/strong><\/p>\n

So back to the extreme amendment proposed in Ohio\u2014which, if it passes, will be the model for other states. This amendment would always allow abortion if the\u00a0mother\u2019s health<\/strong>\u00a0is on the line. Further, this amendment would let the\u00a0abortionist<\/strong>\u00a0be the one to determine if the mother\u2019s health is on the line.<\/p>\n

And now we see an abortionist telling us that for 100% of\u00a0women\u00a0people who become pregnant, their health is indeed on the line.<\/p>\n

That means that whether the fetus would be deemed viable doesn\u2019t matter. Every baby would be legal fodder for the abortion pill cocktail, suction machine, or forceps\u2014because healthy pregnancy or not, it is always a \u201chealth issue.\u201d<\/p>\n

The viability debate is over. Hern killed it. Now we\u2019ll see what the voters decide.<\/p>\n
