When asked, CEO Alexis McGill Johnson didn\u2019t provide specifics for the number of justices or length of term limits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She told MSNBC host and former White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki that the abortion giant was supporting other voices, like NARAL\u2019s, that had called for reforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think it\u2019s really important to call for structural reforms because that is what actually sustains progress,\u201d she said. \u201cIt would be one thing to call for a justice to step down for whatever reason but the reality is that the way in which the system has been captured requires us to engage in structural reform in a different way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McGill Johnson added that Planned Parenthood \u201cfelt like it was important for us to lend our voice in a moment where abortion rights is so clearly kind of emblematic of the challenge that we are seeing within our democracy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current judges, she said, are \u201cout of step\u201d with majorities of the American public, and the courts\u2019 \u201clegitimacy\u201d is therefore \u201cin question.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p_hztE6Rnm8\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Her comments came after years of heavy judicial losses for the pro-abortion left. The Trump administration added a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/joe-biden\/trump-installed-historic-number-judges-biden-outpacing-far-rcna48142\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historic number of judges<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including three of the Supreme Court justices who ruled to overturn <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> last summer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the years, polling has shown varying opinions on abortion but has indicated somewhat contradictory opinions on <em>Roe<\/em>, which effectively allowed abortion up to birth with its companion decision in <em>Doe v. Bolton<\/em>. Although some polling shows support for <em>Roe<\/em>, Americans have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/1576\/abortion.aspx#:~:text=Currently%2C%2050%25%20of%20Americans%20say,%2C%20trend%20from%201995%2D2022.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">historically favored<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at least some restrictions on abortion, and continue to do so, according to a\u00a0<\/span>new <a href=\"https:\/\/maristpoll.marist.edu\/polls\/abortion-rights-in-the-united-states\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NPR\/PBS NewsHour\/Marist National Poll<\/a>, which found that 66% of Americans think abortion should only be allowed, &#8220;at most, within the first three months during pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NPR\/PBS NewsHour\/Marist National Poll also found\u00a0that the proportion of Americans who support pro-life laws \u201cup to the time of cardiac activity at about 6 weeks\u201d has\u00a0<strong>increased from 27% to 40%\u00a0<\/strong>since the overturning of <em>Roe<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As president, Trump also appointed Texas judge Matthew Kacsmaryk, who recently upended the Food and Drug Administration\u2019s approval of the abortion pill mifepristone \u2014 a decision that now lies with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides voting rights, McGill Johnson honed in on Kacsmaryk\u2019s decision during her interview with Psaki. \u201cThe fact that you have, again, this lone Texas judge that can now bring cases \u2013 you can form shop there, bring cases to the Fifth Circuit, which is also conservative, and up to the Supreme Court now, which has a conservative majority.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFind a court you want to hear your case,\u201d Psaki interjected in agreement. McGill Johnson responded, \u201cExactly,\u201d adding, \u201cand that is a way to circumvent \u2026 you know, kind of popularly elected opinions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">McGill Johnson\u2019s comments and proposals pointed to a view that\u2019s at odds with the traditional understanding that judges should uphold the law rather than follow public opinion. Part of the reasoning behind maintaining lifelong terms for judges is that they shouldn\u2019t be incentivized to worry about how their decision might hurt their electoral prospects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-283198 size-large aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both Psaki and McGill Johnson seemed to be alluding to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2023\/04\/12\/abortion-pill-ruling-puts-judge-shopping-concerns-back-in-spotlight.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accusations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Alliance Defending Freedom, which is representing doctors in the abortion pill case, \u201cjudge shopped\u201d or searched for judges who would rule in their favor. Kacsmaryk is the only judge in that district court, making it a single-judge division \u2013 something Planned Parenthood is also targeting in its list of reforms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cInterest groups can shop for judges who align with their views \u2014 often judges they\u2019ve helped get confirmed \u2014 and then deliberately send them cases, knowing they will decide against reproductive freedom, gender equity, LGBTQ+ liberation, access to health care, and civil liberties,\u201d the group claimed in a Sunday <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/about-us\/newsroom\/press-releases\/planned-parenthood-announces-support-for-supreme-court-expansion-and-term-limits-as-part-of-expanded-court-reform-position\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in fact, the abortion industry itself (including Planned Parenthood) has also &#8220;shopped for judges who align with their views&#8221; in countless cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Court reforms have been advanced by the left for years, and became especially prominent after Supreme Court Justices Kavanaugh\u2019s and Barrett\u2019s nominations. Congressional Democrats have proposed a court-packing proposal but the idea has encountered roadblocks from both President Biden and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) who reportedly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/04\/15\/987723528\/democrats-unveil-long-shot-plan-to-expand-size-of-supreme-court-from-9-to-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she wouldn\u2019t bring the proposal to the floor for a vote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a 2020 presidential candidate, Biden resisted the idea of packing the courts. In 2021, President Biden convened a task force on reform more broadly, but the members <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/12\/07\/us\/politics\/supreme-court-packing-expansion.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">declined<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to take a position on packing the Supreme Court. After the Court\u2019s decision in <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women&#8217;s Health Organization<\/em> to overturn <em>Roe<\/em>, the White House <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/biden-remains-opposed-to-court-packing-despite-roe-reversal-white-house-confirms\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clarified<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Biden still opposed court packing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An NPR\/PBS NewsHour\/Marist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/expanding-supreme-court-opposed-americans-roe-poll-1719806\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted after <em>Dobbs<\/em> similarly showed a majority of Americans (54%) opposing expanding the number of justices on the Supreme Court.
