Politico reporters were named as Pulitzer finalists for their coverage of the Supreme Court and abortion \u2013 including the highly controversial leak of the draft opinion in <\/span>Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization<\/span><\/i> — the case that led to the overturning of\u00a0Roe v. Wade<\/em>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On its website, the Pulitzer Board named Politico\u2019s Heidi Pryzbyla, Peter S. Canellos, Hailey Fuchs, and Josh Gerstein as finalists for \u201cBreaking News Reporting.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cFor exclusive coverage of the unprecedented leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion overturning Roe v. Wade and giving states the power to regulate abortion,\u201d the site read.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gerstein was one of the reporters who helped leak the draft opinion in <\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i>. The leak stirred widespread unrest \u2013 including increased harassment against pro-life pregnancy centers \u2013 and prompted speculation that someone within the Court attempted to undermine the justices\u2019 decision.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Justice Samuel Alito, who penned the majority opinion, reportedly said the leak made he and other justices \u201ctargets of assassination.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThose of us who were thought to be in the majority, thought to have approved my draft opinion, were really targets of assassination,\u201d he said, according to <\/span>The Wall Street Journal<\/span><\/a>. And in fact, an armed man was arrested<\/a> for plotting to kill Justice Brett Kavanaugh.<\/span><\/p>\n

Protesters notably showed up at justices\u2019 homes, <\/span>raising questions<\/span><\/a> about whether they violated federal law. More specifically, <\/span>Section 1507<\/span><\/a> of U.S. Code imposes fines or imprisonment for that type of behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As Live Action News <\/span>previously noted<\/span><\/a>, pro-life centers <\/span>encountered<\/span><\/a> threats, vandalism, and even firebombing as the nation awaited the final decision in <\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i>. The Department of Homeland Security even released a memo in May that warned of a \u201csignificant increase in violent threats\u2014many made online via social media and some of which are under investigation\u2014directed toward some US Supreme Court Justices and the Supreme Court building.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

It added: \u201cThe volume of violent threats targeting Supreme Court Justices, members of Congress, other public officials, clergy, healthcare officials and providers, and others associated with the abortion debate are likely to persist and may increase leading up to and following the issuing of the Court\u2019s official ruling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

By October, a study from the Crime Research and Prevention Center <\/span>reported<\/span><\/a> 135 attacks on pro-life groups between May \u2014 when the draft was released \u2014 and September of 2022. Meanwhile, abortion groups and abortion supporters only saw six attacks.<\/span><\/p>\n

As Politico noted, the leak was unprecedented. \u201cNo draft decision in the modern history of the court has been disclosed publicly while a case was still pending,\u201d it <\/span>said<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Amid intense scrutiny, the Court conducted an <\/span>internal investigation<\/span><\/a> involving 82 employees but \u201cwas unable to identify a person responsible by a preponderance of the evidence.\u201d A statement from the Court blasted the leak as an \u201cextraordinary betrayal of trust\u201d and said it \u201cwas no mere misguided attempt at protest. It was a grave assault on the judicial process.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
