{"id":291148,"date":"2023-05-16T06:39:46","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T11:39:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=291148"},"modified":"2023-05-15T17:54:43","modified_gmt":"2023-05-15T22:54:43","slug":"nfl-draft-pick-derick-hall-born-dead","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nfl-draft-pick-derick-hall-born-dead\/","title":{"rendered":"Mom of Seattle Seahawks NFL draft pick Derick Hall says he was &#8216;born dead&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>NFL player Derick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5wSZIAVqcu0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hall<\/a> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/nfl-draftee-derick-hall-on-his-moms-fight-for-his-life-as-a-preemie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drafted<\/a> by the Seattle Seahawks in April and said his success is thanks to his mother&#8217;s advocacy for his life when he was born four months early \u2014 and, as his mother said, &#8220;dead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was actually born dead,\u201d his mother, Stacy Gooden-Crandle, told\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/college\/auburn\/Article\/PMARSHONAU-Derick-Halls-incredible-journey-to-Auburn-137832425\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-testid=\"standard-link\">Auburn Undercover<\/a>. \u201cThe doctors wanted me to just let nature take its course. We decided we wanted to fight for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On Marcy 19, 2001, Hall was born without a heartbeat before he was resuscitated. He weighed just two pounds and one ounce and spent a week on life support with bleeding in his brain. Hall spent five months in the hospital following his birth, and doctors gave his parents a grim prediction of what they thought his future looked like.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1CbrCLKyGPk\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They said he&#8217;d never be able to walk or be able to talk,&#8221; said Gooden-Crandle. &#8220;They said he&#8217;d just be a vegetable. He&#8217;d be 85 percent mentally retarded. He wouldn&#8217;t have any quality of life. They said, &#8216;We shouldn&#8217;t try to save this baby.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>His grandmother, Bobbie Brown, stayed in the hospital with him at night to watch over him. She knew his story would be different than the doctors were predicting. \u201cYou\u2019re going to be something because you got some big hands,\u201d Brown recalls telling the tiny Hall one night in the hospital. \u201cGod got a plan for this kid right here.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"InContent_Center_Background\">\n<div class=\"InContent_Center_Padding\">\n<div id=\"InContent_Center_EETY3LUYKVAQBD7HHERUVLYYZY\" class=\"ad-observer\">Hall&#8217;s mother was scared. She didn&#8217;t know if she could afford to raise a medically-fragile child. But, she said, &#8220;We just trusted God wholeheartedly, and look what we&#8217;ve got now.&#8221;<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Hall is now six-feet, three inches tall, and weighs 240 pounds, defying the odds that were stacked against him. The negative views on his health and life served as fuel that inspired and motivated him. He began playing flag football at age four, though his parents, Gooden-Crandle and Cedric Crandle, who married when Hall was young, hesitated at first.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe earliest thing I remember is being four or five years old and having an asthma attack,\u201d Hall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/nfl-draftee-derick-hall-on-his-moms-fight-for-his-life-as-a-preemie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cI was in the hospital for three weeks. Going through all that at a young age, going through breathing machines and treatments and stuff like that, getting through all of that every year at a young age really put me in a position to learn how to fight, compete, and face adversity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hall&#8217;s mother said her son never let the medical issues he went through hold him back. &#8220;I told him you have to push through it and fight through it,&#8221; she said. &#8220;He loved football. I got the coaches inhalers; I kept one in my purse. Everybody had one just in case he needed it. He&#8217;s just a fighter.
