{"id":291100,"date":"2023-05-16T20:36:06","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T01:36:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=291100"},"modified":"2023-05-16T15:48:03","modified_gmt":"2023-05-16T20:48:03","slug":"illinois-aggrieved-party-sue-pregnancy-centers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/illinois-aggrieved-party-sue-pregnancy-centers\/","title":{"rendered":"Illinois set to allow &#8216;any aggrieved party&#8217; to sue pregnancy help centers"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Illinois lawmakers passed a &#8220;reproductive rights&#8221; legislative <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wandtv.com\/community\/illinois-house-approves-package-of-reproductive-health-care-bills-on-partisan-votes\/article_cfb48aa2-efa1-11ed-a155-4be401cc04f0.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">package<\/a> on May 10, further expanding the state&#8217;s permissive abortion laws.<\/p>\n<p>Within the package of bills is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ilga.gov\/legislation\/billstatus.asp?DocNum=1909&amp;GAID=17&amp;GA=103&amp;DocTypeID=SB&amp;LegID=146759&amp;SessionID=112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 1909<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a bill that, as Capitol News Illinois <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitolnewsillinois.com\/NEWS\/crisis-pregnancy-centers-could-face-legal-action-under-measure-poised-for-pritzkers-signature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">notes<\/a>, makes pregnancy resource centers (PRCs) &#8220;subject to the same consumer fraud standards as car dealerships, retailers, and service-based businesses.&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0The bill passed with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitolnewsillinois.com\/NEWS\/crisis-pregnancy-centers-could-face-legal-action-under-measure-poised-for-pritzkers-signature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vote<\/a> of 70-40.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per the measure, PRCs can be sued under the Illinois Consumer Fraud and Deceptive Business Practices Act if they engage in what is considered \u201cdeceptive acts or practices.\u201d The attorney general&#8217;s office can choose to look into PRCs without any complaints filed, or individuals can sue for &#8220;deception.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As Rep. Bill Hauter noted during the debate, any &#8220;aggrieved&#8221; party can sue a PRC \u2014 which means that <em>an abortion facility<\/em> could even choose to sue a neighboring PRC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo Planned Parenthood of Chicago can rain down complaints as an \u2018aggrieved party\u2019 on a pregnancy center in Peoria, Illinois,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wthitv.com\/news\/crisis-pregnancy-centers-could-face-legal-action-under-measure-poised-for-pritzker-s-signature\/article_55c408bc-55fc-5bc1-82f0-bd8b59eaac21.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CSo%20Planned%20Parenthood%20of%20Chicago,on%20March%2021%20in%20Springfield.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. Hauter&#8217;s wife runs a PRC and he described his family as &#8220;heavily involved&#8221; in their mission.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion advocates have long targeted PRCs because most of them do not refer for or recommend abortions. Instead, they offer pregnant women and families countless resources, including ultrasounds, STD testing, medical referrals, baby clothes, diapers, wipes, furniture, formula, food, and connections with state resources. A report published in 2022 by the Charlotte Lozier Institute revealed that these centers have saved <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/five-year-800000-lives-saved-pregnancy-centers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 800,000 lives<\/a> in five years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HcBsjvfQA3k\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Many pro-abortion lawmakers used fear-based tactics to defend the bill.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Some of the horror stories [women] had endured in terms like being trapped in rooms and again being forced to \u2014 when they had already made a determination on their own bodies \u2014 being forced to listen to other people critique them or yell at them,&#8221; said Senator Celina Villanueva, the bill&#8217;s sponsor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBack in 2010, I walked into one of these fake clinics,\u201d Rep. Dagmara Avelar <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitolnewsillinois.com\/NEWS\/crisis-pregnancy-centers-could-face-legal-action-under-measure-poised-for-pritzkers-signature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> during the bill&#8217;s debate.\u201cWhen I was talking to the person in this clinic and I asked for my options, abortion was out of the question.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a statement, the Illinois Freedom Caucus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.decaturtribune.com\/2023\/05\/11\/illinois-freedom-caucus-reacts-to-house-approval-of-anti-pro-life-bill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reacted<\/a> to the bill\u2019s passage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Senate Bill 1909 is nothing more than a power grab to give the Attorney General carte blanche authority to target crisis pregnancy centers for any reason. Anyone \u2013 even people who have had no direct connection to a crisis pregnancy center \u2013 can lodge a complaint and essentially launch an investigation,\u201d they said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis legislation is not about protecting anyone but the monsters in our state who celebrate the brutal murder of innocent children as a \u2018right.\u2019 This bill is not only a violation of the First Amendment rights of those involved (mostly volunteers) at crisis pregnancy centers, but it also is an overt persecution of people whose only crime is disagreeing with the abortion death cult. Senate Bill 1909 will be challenged in court. It will be overturned, and we will continue to speak out against the extreme positions of the pro-abortion advocates in our state.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Lawmakers also passed <a href=\"https:\/\/ilga.gov\/legislation\/103\/SB\/PDF\/10300SB1344eng.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 1344<\/a>, which will require insurance coverage for abortion, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ilga.gov\/legislation\/fulltext.asp?DocName=10300HB3326ham004&amp;GA=103&amp;SessionId=112&amp;DocTypeId=HB&amp;LegID=148488&amp;DocNum=3326&amp;GAID=17&amp;SpecSess=&amp;Session=\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House Bill 3326<\/a>, which will prohibit law enforcement from using automatic license plate readers to prosecute people who travel from out of state for abortions.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate bills now head to the desk of Governor JB Pritzker for signature, while the House bill goes to the Senate for debate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 people with the truth about abortion that no one else is telling them?
