While Canada has not practiced capital punishment for over <\/span>61 years<\/span><\/a>, it has initiated a <\/span>program to euthanize prisoners<\/span><\/a> utilizing its\u00a0<\/span>Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) law<\/span><\/a>. MAID is Canada\u2019s program to permit euthanasia and assisted suicide for, as AP News<\/a> describes it,\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>people with serious disabilities to choose to be killed in the absence of any other medical issue.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Canada\u2019s euthanasia and assisted suicide laws are among the world\u2019s most permissive and are set to<\/span> expand in 2024<\/span><\/a> to people with mental disabilities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because of this, Canada is now the international leader in euthanizing prisoners. While the raw numbers are low, only nine prisoners as of <\/span>March 2022<\/span><\/a>, they far exceed Belgium, which euthanized its first prisoner <\/span>this year<\/span><\/a>. Statistically important also, the first three prisoners <\/span>euthanized in shackles<\/span><\/a> were all Indigenous Canadians.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Thirty-two percent<\/span><\/a> of the prison population<\/span> are Indigenous. Kim Beaudin, vice-chief of the <\/span>Congress of Aboriginal Peoples<\/span><\/a> and a member of the <\/span>Correctional Service of Canada\u2019s<\/span> National Aboriginal Advisory Committee<\/span><\/a>, <\/span>stated<\/span><\/a> in a National News story from April 20, 2023,\u00a0<\/span>\u201cI\u2019m not in support of (the law) because I\u2019ve always believed there should be hope for them to get out of there…But a lot of people have given up; a lot of Indigenous people have given up inside.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Ivan Zinger, the Correctional Investigator of Canada, <\/span>also stated<\/span><\/a> that the use of MAID in any Canadian prison is \u201cethically wrong\u201d and \u201cCorrections should not be in the business of shortening the lives of individuals under their roof.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Human rights advocates suspect prisoners will use MAID as a way to escape their miserable conditions. \u201cJames\u201d is a Canadian prisoner and contributed to <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Dying with a Smile, Just Knowing that Somebody\u2019s Listened to Me\u201d: End-Of-Life Care and Medical Assistance in Dying in Canadian Prisons<\/span><\/a>, by Jessica<\/span>\u00a0Shaw<\/span>. In that study, he stated, \u201cYeah\u2026 I look at: if you\u2019re doing a long sentence and you\u2019re never gonna get out, and the parole board\u2019s always turning you down, and your CO and the CMTM parole officers are saying \u201cno, no, no,\u201d then you\u2019re stuck doin\u2019 time for the rest of your life. If the assisted dying is an option, it should be looked at, especially if there\u2019s no chance of you ever getting out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Alex Schadenberg of Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, an international organization that opposes assisted suicide and euthanization based in Canada, agrees with Ivan Zinger and <\/span>added<\/span><\/a>, \u201cCanada must completely re-evaluate its euthanasia law.
