Speaking in defense of the radical bill, the state&#8217;s attorney general asserted that preborn children do not possess any legal rights until they are \u201cout\u201d of the womb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hundreds of pro-life Maine citizens attended a hearing on Monday to voice their opposition to An Act to Improve Maine\u2019s Reproductive Laws, or LD 1619, which would make Maine\u2019s abortion laws some of the most permissive in the country, if enacted. During the nearly 20-hour hearing, Maine Attorney General Aaron Frey <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.themainewire.com\/2023\/05\/maine-ag-unborn-babies-dont-have-rights-until-theyre-out-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the abortion decision shouldn\u2019t take the preborn child into account.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a woman making a decision about what to do with her body and what\u2019s going on with her body,\u201d Frey said.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThere isn\u2019t a live child that\u2019s been \u2014 that\u2019s out at this point, that this decision is concerned with.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-283198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LD 1619 was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wabi.tv\/2023\/05\/01\/abortion-law-discussed-maine-state-house\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">proposed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in early April by Gov. Janet Mills in a purported effort to allow abortion later than current viability standards, which is typically considered to be 24 weeks (even though preborn children as young as 21 weeks gestation have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/21-weeks-premature-baby-survive\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survived<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and thrived), or when a licensed physician signs off on the procedure. However, there are currently no laws prohibiting abortion after viability in the state. The bill would remove language that penalizes a <em>non-licensed<\/em> person from performing or aiding in an abortion and, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainerighttolife.com\/_files\/ugd\/8f7815_5eabfe930f6b4c638aef5d5b534c8b79.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the Maine Right to Life Committee, \u201cwould encourage the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/victims-abortionist-gosnell-forgotten\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kermit Gosnells<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the world to specifically come to Maine since there are no penalties and only protection for abortionists.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis bill ignores what is in the best interest of the life and health of the mother and her unborn child and only seeks to expand the abortion industry\u2019s stake hold in Maine by allowing abortions for any reason up until birth with no punishment for those who harm women and their babies,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainerighttolife.com\/_files\/ugd\/8f7815_5eabfe930f6b4c638aef5d5b534c8b79.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Suzanne Lafreniere of the Catholic Diocese of Maine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maine-lawmakers-abortion-expansion-birth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recently reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Maine is no stranger to extreme abortion legislation. Last year, the state enacted a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maine-quietly-institutes-buffer-zones-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">buffer zone<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d law to limit pro-life activity outside abortion facilities and, in recent years,\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-pro-abortion-laws-maine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">also passed<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0legislation to require Medicaid and any insurance companies that cover prenatal care to also cover abortion, along with a law allowing non-physicians to commit surgical aspiration abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the state&#8217;s extreme laws, State Rep. Laurel Libby, who testified at the hearing, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/hundreds-pro-lifers-dominate-marathon-night-hearing-maines-limits-abortion-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">praised<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the \u201cremarkable\u201d movement of pro-lifers showing up to oppose the bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat I&#8217;ve seen is that there is not just enthusiasm for the public hearing Monday and yesterday, but to continue the efforts moving forward and make sure that people are eager to keep reaching out to their legislators and advocating for them to kill this bill,\u201d Libby told Fox News Digital in an exclusive interview.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She continued, \u201cYesterday and today, for the past 18 hours, we have seen the heart of Maine\u2026 We&#8217;ve seen the indomitable spirit of true Mainers\u2026 Their pure intention to speak up for life and to speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves.
