{"id":290289,"date":"2023-05-02T18:44:28","date_gmt":"2023-05-02T23:44:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=290289"},"modified":"2023-05-02T11:16:52","modified_gmt":"2023-05-02T16:16:52","slug":"hawaii-advanced-assisted-suicide-weakening-waiting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hawaii-advanced-assisted-suicide-weakening-waiting\/","title":{"rendered":"Hawaii expands assisted suicide, weakening waiting periods"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Waiting periods in Hawaii\u2019s assisted suicide law have been <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">re-characterized as \u201cbarriers\u201d and are set to be removed as early as this week. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assisted suicide advocates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.compassionandchoices.org\/in-your-state\/hawaii\/bill-summary\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201c[r]ather than a safety feature\u201d they have \u201cproven to be a barrier for individuals seeking this option.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/session\/measure_indiv.aspx?billtype=HB&amp;billnumber=650&amp;year=2023\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HB650<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cA Bill for an Act Relating to Health,\u201d was placed on the governor\u2019s desk over the weekend. Governor Josh Green M.D., whose State of Hawaii, Department of Health <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/sessions\/session2023\/Testimony\/HB650_TESTIMONY_HLT_02-01-23_.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testified in favor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the bill, is expected to sign the assisted suicide expansion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four safety protections are set to be modified or eliminated under this bill. First, advanced practice nurses, not just doctors, will be permitted to write prescriptions for lethal drugs for those qualifying individuals under the law. Second, advanced practice nurses will also be permitted to provide any \u201ccounseling\u201d required under the law, including <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.civilbeat.org\/2023\/04\/hawaiis-medically-assisted-suicide-program-is-poised-to-be-expanded\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">determining a person\u2019s mental capacity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWaiting periods\u201d between requests for suicide drugs will also be weakened. Current waiting periods for the deadly drugs are 20 days between oral requests. The signed bill will immediately reduce that time period to five (5) days.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not enough for activists and legislators, the five-day waiting period may be waived entirely if the patient is determined by the nurse or doctor to not likely survive the next five days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eva Andrade, director of the Hawaii Catholic Conference, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hawaiicatholicherald.com\/2022\/02\/16\/eva-andrade-issues-from-birth-to-death\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">noted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this is a \u201cscary part\u201d and \u201copens the door to the abuse of our elderly.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just prior to being sent to Gov. Green\u2019s desk, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capitol.hawaii.gov\/sessions\/session2023\/CommReports\/HB650_SD1_SSCR1805_.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a provision permitting family and marriage therapists<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to determine a patient\u2019s mental capacity was removed.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Connecticut bill to legalize assisted suicide died during that state&#8217;s legislative session in April. The bill died in part because of efforts to expand assisted suicide in other states. According to Connecticut Public, State Rep. Steve Stafstrom (D-Bridgeport), co-chair of the Connecticut General Assembly Joint Committee on Judiciary <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctpublic.org\/news\/2023-04-21\/the-week-in-ct-news-a-first-swing-at-the-budget-medical-aid-in-dying-bill-stalls-again\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cI still struggle very mightily with this bill&#8230; \u00a0But I think I struggled less with it earlier in the session before we saw legislative efforts and litigation efforts in other states to undo many of the protections we\u2019ve tried to put into this bill for Connecticut residents&#8230;.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 people with the truth about abortion that no one else is telling them?
