{"id":290167,"date":"2023-04-29T11:14:16","date_gmt":"2023-04-29T16:14:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=290167"},"modified":"2023-04-28T16:34:23","modified_gmt":"2023-04-28T21:34:23","slug":"pro-life-laws-defeated-nebraska-south-carolina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-laws-defeated-nebraska-south-carolina\/","title":{"rendered":"Pro-life laws defeated in Nebraska and South Carolina"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Two bills, which would have protected most preborn children from abortion in both Nebraska and South Carolina, have both been defeated.<\/p>\n<p>In Nebraska, <a href=\"https:\/\/nebraskalegislature.gov\/bills\/view_bill.php?DocumentID=50641\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LB 626<\/a>, or the Nebraska Heartbeat Act, had been introduced by Senator Joni Albrecht in January. Currently, preborn children are protected from abortion in the state after 20 weeks gestation; LB 626 would have protected them after a heartbeat can be detected, typically at six weeks gestation.<\/p>\n<p>The bill <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-nebraska-south-carolina-c78ec68b095180a9b53f6e136ba3e045\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">narrowly failed<\/a> to pass, coming short <strong>just one vote<\/strong> to break filibuster.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our hearts are broken for the lives who will suffer from this decision, but it\u2019s not over,&#8221; Nebraska Right to Life said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NebraskaRightToLife\/posts\/pfbid02BAf5V8m71fLmvYJ9CBXAujptH16fPQsEkZSgXmG9Nd6Rz4MRJ7gi6e2eF2RHeN6ol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. &#8220;We will continue fighting to protect babies and mothers in our state.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cpdY97GOK2I\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Gov. Jim Pillen also <a href=\"https:\/\/wset.com\/news\/nation-world\/nebraska-lawmakers-fall-short-of-votes-to-advance-controversial-abortion-bill-lb626-cardiac-activity-exemptions-abortion-debate-roe-v-wade-overturned#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized the vote<\/a>, singling out Senator Merv Riepe, who chose not to vote.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am profoundly disappointed in the cloture vote today,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is unacceptable for senators to be present not voting on such a momentous vote. I call on Senator Merv Riepe to make a motion to reconsider and stand by the commitments to Life he has made in the past.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In South Carolina, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scstatehouse.gov\/sess125_2023-2024\/bills\/3552.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">H. 3552<\/a>, or the Human Life Protection Act, would have protected preborn children from abortion beginning at fertilization, the very moment of their existence. The bill specifically referenced the <em>Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization<\/em> decision, which overturned <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, by pointing out that South Carolina was exercising its political power to protect preborn children. Yet lawmakers voted 22-21 to shelve the bill for the rest of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Senator Shane Massey admitted that there hadn&#8217;t been enough support for the legislation to pass, he told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wistv.com\/2023\/04\/27\/female-senators-spearhead-another-rejection-near-total-abortion-ban-sc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WIS<\/a>. \u201cI think we all kind of knew where this was headed,\u201d Massey said. \u201cBut look, we wanted to give it our best shot.
