{"id":289969,"date":"2023-04-26T18:38:56","date_gmt":"2023-04-26T23:38:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=289969"},"modified":"2023-04-26T15:29:44","modified_gmt":"2023-04-26T20:29:44","slug":"new-mexico-edgewood-66th-sanctuary-unborn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-mexico-edgewood-66th-sanctuary-unborn\/","title":{"rendered":"New Mexico city of Edgewood becomes 66th &#8216;Sanctuary City for the Unborn&#8217; in US"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><em>Disclaimer: The views and opinions expressed in this article are those of the guest author and not necessarily of Live Action or Live Action News.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a meeting which began on Tuesday night and ended in the wee hours Wednesday morning, the rown council of Edgewood, New Mexico (pop. 6,174), considered <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a \u201cSanctuary City for the Unborn\u201d (SCFTU) ordinance \u201cRequiring Abortion Providers in the Town of Edgewood, New Mexico to Comply with Federal Law.\u201d The council had previously considered the ordinance during a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/edgewood-new-mexico-sanctuary-city-hb7\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">workshop<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on April 4, determining to hold a final meeting on the ordinance at their meeting on April 25.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ordinance, which passed 4-1, made Edgewood the 66th city in the nation and the fourth city in New Mexico to pass a SCFTU ordinance. The council meeting, which began at 5:00 pm on Tuesday night and concluded over eight hours later at 1:44 am on Wednesday morning, was not without pushback. And while many amendments were discussed, some which would have even delayed the enforcement date until after the Supreme Court of New Mexico or the Supreme Court of the United States addressed the issue of federal Comstock laws, the council ultimately chose to pass an ordinance which did <em>not<\/em> contain delayed enforcement, but went into effect almost immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ordinance is the first SCFTU ordinance passed in New Mexico since Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed the Reproductive and Gender-Affirming Health Care Freedom Act into law. The Reproductive and Gender-Affirming Health Care Freedom Act prohibits counties and cities from restricting abortion access and was said by members of the legislature to be a \u2018solution\u2019 to cities and counties throughout New Mexico passing SCFTU ordinances.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_289975\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-289975\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-289975\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edgewood-nm-2-mark-lee-dickson-700x525.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edgewood-nm-2-mark-lee-dickson-700x525.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edgewood-nm-2-mark-lee-dickson-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edgewood-nm-2-mark-lee-dickson-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edgewood-nm-2-mark-lee-dickson-500x375.jpg 500w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/edgewood-nm-2-mark-lee-dickson.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-289975\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo: Mark Lee Dickson (Facebook)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Senators and representatives from across the state showed up to voice their support or opposition to the measure. Speaking in favor of the ordinance was Representative Stefani Lord (R-Sandia Park) in person, Representatives John Block (R-Alamogordo) and Senator David Gallegos (R-Eunice) via Zoom call, and Senator Gregg Schmedes (R-Tijeras). Representatives speaking against the measure were Representative Andrea Romero (D-Santa Fe) and Representative Matthew McQueen (D-Santa Fe).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like the ordinances passed in the cities of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hobbs-first-sanctuary-city-unborn-new-mexico\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hobbs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-mexico-clovis-63rd-sanctuary-city-unborn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clovis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-mexico-city-eunice-65th-sanctuary-unborn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eunice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the counties of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lea-county-new-mexico-sanctuary-county-unborn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/roosevelt-county-new-mexico-sanctuary-unborn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roosevelt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Edgewood Ordinance requires compliance with federal statutes, specifically 18 U.S.C. \u00a7\u00a7 1461-1462, which prohibit shipping and receiving of abortion-inducing drugs and abortion-paraphernalia. The ordinance was provided to Commissioner Sterling Donner from the Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn Initiative and was drafted by Attorney Jonathan F. The first step towards protecting the lives of unborn children. Edgewood just sent a message to everyone stating we will stand for the lives of unborn children.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Edgewood is the fourth municipality and the sixth political subdivision to pass an ordinance in New Mexico from the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sanctuarycitiesfortheunborn.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanctuary Cities for the Unborn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Initiative, the second city in New Mexico to pass an ordinance since New Mexico\u2019s Attorney General filed suit against two cities and two counties in the state, the first city to pass an ordinance since the New Mexico Supreme Court issued a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-mexico-supreme-court-stay-sanctuary-battles\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stay<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of four of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-mexico-city-eunice-65th-sanctuary-unborn\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ordinances which had been passed in the state, and the first city to pass an ordinance since the City of Eunice in New Mexico <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/lawsuit-new-mexico-comstock-act\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sued<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Attorney General Raul Torrez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i><strong>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 people with the truth about abortion that no one else is telling them?
