Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2023\/04\/21\/national\/abortion-pill-japan-approval\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Japan Times<\/a>, the country&#8217;s health minister still needs to sign off on the pill&#8217;s use but is expected to give the final approval.<\/p>\n<p>Though it seems likely that chemical abortions will soon be available in the country, officials are still weighing the specific protocols, including whether or not to implement guidelines that would keep women in the hospital while they undergo the multi-day abortion pill procedure.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gnEHZiud8dg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/center>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Chemical abortion via the abortion pill is a two-step regimen involving the drugs mifepristone and misoprostol. The procedure begins when the woman takes mifepristone, which blocks progesterone and starves the baby of nutrients needed to survive. Typically one to two days later, she takes misoprostol, which causes contractions and bleeding so that she delivers the baby. Risks include severe cramping, heavy bleeding,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and headache. Some women have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-21-years-secrecy-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">even died<\/a>.* Data has shown that though the procedure now accounts for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/majority-abortions-us-done-abortion-pill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the majority<\/a> of all American abortions, it is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-four-times-dangerous-surgical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">f<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-four-times-dangerous-surgical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">our times more dangerous<\/a> than surgical abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Ligaya Acosta, the regional director of Asia and Oceania at Human Life International, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/254174\/japanese-panel-backs-abortion-pill-amid-small-pro-life-protests\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Catholic News Agency<\/a> that the pro-life community in the country is a small but growing movement. She said that though many people in the country are pro-life, they don&#8217;t know how to advocate for life in the government, which is often influenced by &#8220;pressure&#8221; from outside sources to expand abortion.\u00a0\u201cThey are people who are very committed to promoting and defending life and family,\u201d Acosta said of the general population. \u201cThe Japanese are very pro-life people, but most are silent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-283198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though abortion advocates in Japan are celebrating the pill&#8217;s likely approval, they are still fighting for the further loosening of pro-life protections. The country currently requires a married woman seeking an abortion to get the permission of her husband, a provision some abortion advocates say is unfair.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeing able to control one\u2019s own pregnancy is already the minimum requirement for gender equality,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2023\/04\/21\/national\/abortion-pill-japan-approval\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> Kumi Tsukahara, director of the Reproductive Health Rights Literacy Institute. \u201cAlthough this discussion is on medicine, we must not lose sight of how this is a human rights issue.\u201d<\/p>\n<h5>**The FDA has received reports of serious adverse events in patients who took mifepristone. As of June 30, 2022, there were 28 reports of deaths in patients associated with mifepristone since the product was approved in September 2000, including two cases of ectopic pregnancy (a pregnancy located outside the womb, such as in the fallopian tubes) resulting in death; and several fatal cases of severe systemic infection (also called sepsis). The adverse events cannot with certainty be causally attributed to mifepristone because of concurrent use of other drugs, other medical or surgical treatments, co-existing medical conditions, and information gaps about patient health status and clinical management of the patient. The FDA has reviewed this information and did not identify any new safety signals.
