Bill Lee (R) signed a bill that prohibits local governments from assisting another person in obtaining an abortion that would be illegal in Tennessee. That includes support through a health plan or by funding out-of-state travel for an abortion. According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\/news\/gov-lee-signs-into-law-that-governments-cant-provide-money-for-abortions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WTVF<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Nashville lawmakers had asked the Metro Employee Benefit Board to fund out-of-state travel for employees.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tennessee banned nearly all abortions last year when its trigger law took effect. Lee followed in February by proposing to grant pregnancy centers $100 million in funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More recently, however, the legislature <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/governor\/news\/2023\/4\/23\/gov--lee-s-full--tennessee--leading-the-nation--agenda-passes.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">passed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its budget but with a much lower funding level of $20 million for pregnancy centers.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br style=\"font-weight: 400;\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s unclear what caused the dramatic reduction, and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tennessee-crisis-pregnancy-center-abortion-0d3eac27d68e55e415ef6ef4d4a47bc3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Associated Press<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> seemed to attribute it to the result of legislative negotiations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bo Watson, chairman of the Senate Finance, Ways and Means Committee, reportedly said that \u201c[a]fter a considerable conversation, both negotiating teams agreed that we would leave $20 million in the budget for crisis pregnancy centers.\u201d He added: \u201cWe would also like to have further discussions on exactly who these crisis pregnancy centers are and what they do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked, Lee\u2019s office didn\u2019t elaborate on the reason for the lower funding level. Instead, it emphasized that \u201cthe Governor has made it a top priority to boost support for mothers, children and families facing a crisis pregnancy.\u201d Part of Lee\u2019s grant program includes support for direct services to mothers, workforce assistance, housing assistance, and support for Tennesseans considering adoption.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those are part of a broader, $600 million investment in Lee\u2019s Strong Tennessee Families initiative, which includes a Medicaid waiver designed to help provide for mothers and infants. Among other things, that entails covering the cost for two years of diapers, making Tennessee\u2019s postpartum coverage permanent, as well as $10.25 million for care in service of children and families impacted by foster care and adoption. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This year, TN has the opportunity to further strengthen postpartum care for mothers &amp; extend <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TennCare?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TennCare<\/a> services to more than 25,000 additional women, children &amp; families in need.<\/p>\n<p>We are committed to supporting strong families &amp; serving the most vulnerable. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TCI7yxDkn7\">pic.twitter.com\/TCI7yxDkn7<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Gov. Bill Lee (@GovBillLee) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovBillLee\/status\/1623368976523730944?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 8, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move comes amid a broader debate about pro-life pregnancy centers and the role they play in helping women whose states have enacted greater protections for preborn children in the wake of the\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0decision. Prior to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Texas had already allocated $50 million to pregnancy centers while Pennsylvania and Missouri allocated $7 million and $6.5 million respectively, according to the AP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-life centers provide a wide range of services \u2013 from diapers to counseling to ultrasounds \u2013 in states across the nation. According to the pro-life Charlotte Lozier Institute, these centers have saved at least\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/real-world-data-more-than-800000-lives-saved-via-pro-life-pregnancy-centers-since-2016\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">800,000 lives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in recent years and provided <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lozierinstitute.org\/pro-life-pregnancy-centers-served-2-million-people-with-essential-medical-education-and-support-services-in-2019\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nearly $270 million<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> worth of services in 2019. Yet, they continue facing vague allegations of deception, as they did with pro-abortion advocates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-advocates-pregnancy-centers-pennsylvania\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">requesting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> centers\u2019 defunding in Pennsylvania.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Biden administration, meanwhile, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-administration-tennessee-title-x-funding-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decided<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to revoke the state\u2019s nearly $8 million in Title X family planning grants, taking issue with Tennessee\u2019s direction for physicians not to refer for abortions out of state.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 people with the truth about abortion that no one else is telling them?
