{"id":289544,"date":"2023-04-20T16:47:05","date_gmt":"2023-04-20T21:47:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=289544"},"modified":"2023-04-19T19:11:39","modified_gmt":"2023-04-20T00:11:39","slug":"who-laws-abortions-killing-saves-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/who-laws-abortions-killing-saves-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"Head of WHO: Pro-life laws don&#8217;t reduce abortions, and killing preborn humans &#8216;saves lives&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Tedros Ghebreyesus of the World Health Organization (WHO) has made disturbing claims about abortion in apparent reaction to court decisions restricting the abortion pill (mifepristone) in the United States.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;WHO is concerned that the right of women to access safe abortion services, including through the use of medical abortion medicines, are being limited by legislators, and\/or courts,\u201d he said, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.geo.tv\/latest\/482840-who-concerned-about-womens-right-to-safe-abortion-services\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Geo News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Women should always have the right to choose when it comes to their bodies and their health. Restricting access to abortion does not reduce the number of procedures, and only drives women and girls towards unsafe ones, and also death.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He added, &#8220;Ultimately, access to safe abortion is healthcare that saves lives.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ghebreyesus made <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/DrTedros\/status\/1540413054617280513?s=20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar comments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after the Supreme Court overturned <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> last summer. They\u2019re highly questionable, however, given the nature of abortion and recent evidence surrounding restrictions on the procedure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion not only violently ends the life of a preborn child, but also carries potential complications that may endanger the mother\u2019s life. That\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-pill-dangers-women\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially true<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for the abortion pill, which the Food and Drug Administration has dangerously deregulated in recent years. Nevertheless, Tedros\u2019 organization has called for radically loosening restrictions on abortion and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/world-health-organization-at-home-abortion\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promoting at-home abortions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as part of its \u201cself-care\u201d guidelines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gnEHZiud8dg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The months following <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dobbs <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have also indicated that Ghebreyesus is wrong in arguing that restrictions don\u2019t decrease the number of procedures. It\u2019s difficult to track all abortions, especially those that take place in \u201cunderground\u201d or illegal contexts. However, recent preliminary data from the pro-abortion Society of Family Planning indicates a substantial decrease in the number of procedures.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Live Action News <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortions-down-5000-monthly-roe-claims\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, SFP utilized data from facilities that commit abortions. It found:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230; there were 32,260 fewer abortions in the six months following Dobbs (July to December of 2022) when compared to the average monthly number of abortion in the preceding period. That translates into an average of 5,377 fewer abortions each month.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As expected, states with more protective pro-life laws saw steep drops in the number of abortions while less restrictive states (monthly average of 1,858 more abortions) saw increases. Virtual clinics, meanwhile, saw an increase from 3,590 telehealth abortions to 8,540 by December.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The largest declines occurred in red states like Texas and Georgia (15,540 and 10,930 fewer abortions respectively) while the biggest increases occurred in states like Florida (7,190 more abortions), Illinois (6,840), and North Carolina (4,730). SFP noted that \u201c[w]hile the structure of our data is unable to confirm this, the data suggests that many abortion seekers living in restrictive states may have traveled to other nearby states for care.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Michael New, a scholar at the Charlotte Lozier Institute, has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/new-data-show-a-large-decline-in-abortions-post-dobbs\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> SFP\u2019s data is likely underestimating the true impact of pro-life laws. He has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/guttmacher-report-downplays-pro-life-progress\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">argued<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that pro-life laws and advocacy were responsible for abortion declines reported before <em>Dobbs<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Abortion businesses have reported seeing spikes in visits when neighboring states enact protections for preborn humans. Yet, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-evidence-effectiveness-pro-life-laws\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and pro-abortion sources have indicated that distance from abortion facilities reduces the number of abortions.
