{"id":289506,"date":"2023-04-19T15:12:36","date_gmt":"2023-04-19T20:12:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=289506"},"modified":"2023-04-19T18:16:53","modified_gmt":"2023-04-19T23:16:53","slug":"biden-hhs-hotline-reproductive-options","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/biden-hhs-hotline-reproductive-options\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden administration to launch national hotline that will refer for abortions"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>The Biden administration is looking to create a national abortion hotline, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.govexec.com\/management\/2023\/04\/hhs-help-launch-national-abortion-hotline\/385119\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Government Executive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.grants.gov\/web\/grants\/view-opportunity.html?oppId=347425\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">released<\/a> a &#8220;Notice of Funding Opportunity,&#8221; seeking grantees to launch an abortion hotline as part of its Title X program. Called &#8220;the Title X Nondirective Options Information, Counseling, and Referrals Hotline,&#8221; the hotline will allegedly provide &#8220;neutral and factual information,&#8221; as well as counseling and referrals on abortion, prenatal care and delivery, infant care, adoption, and foster care.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Government Executive, &#8220;Those servicing the hotline will not mention any option about which callers\u00a0indicate\u00a0they\u00a0do\u00a0not want to receive information.&#8221; The outlet also notes, &#8220;Only organizations currently receiving grants for Title X family planning services will be eligible to apply. The department estimated it will spend $1.5 million on the hotline.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Vice President Kamala Harris recently held an Interagency Task Force on Reproductive Healthcare Access meeting, which reaffirmed the administration&#8217;s commitment to abortion. \u201cOur administration is fighting on every front to do what we can and what we must to protect the American people and the integrity of our health care system in this country,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Those sentiments were echoed in a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hhs.gov\/about\/news\/2023\/04\/12\/hhs-proposes-measures-bolster-patient-provider-confidentiality-around-reproductive-health-care.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> by HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Finally, HHS is announcing that it will issue a new Notice of Funding Opportunity to establish a safe and secure national hotline to provide referral services to individuals in need of accurate information about their legal reproductive health care options.<\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Secretary Xavier Becerra (@SecBecerra) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecBecerra\/status\/1646589074671652878?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 13, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen the Supreme Court overturned <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>, nearly half a century of precedent changed overnight,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Biden-Harris Administration is committed to protecting women\u2019s lawful access to reproductive health care, including abortion care. President Biden signed not one but two executive orders calling on HHS to take action to meet this moment and we have wasted no time in doing so. Today\u2019s action is yet another important step HHS is taking to protect patients accessing critical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The future grantee will be responsible for creating, operating, and staffing the hotline, as well as maintaining a national referral list for people who call in. Numerous other states, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/massachusetts-abortion-hotline\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Massachusetts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/oregon-abortion-hotline-legal-advice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oregon<\/a>, have already launched abortion hotlines, giving legal advice and connecting women with abortionists.
