Vice President Kamala Harris made a stop at one of the nationwide Women\u2019s March rallies held in major U.S. cities on Saturday, April 15. Speaking in Los Angeles, the vice president <\/span>said<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0\u201c[T]his is a moment that history will show required each of us \u2014 based on our collective love of our country \u2014 to stand up, and fight for, and protect our ideals. That\u2019s what this moment is. When you attack the rights of women in America, you are attacking America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

According to the <\/span>AP<\/span><\/a>, Harris \u201ccalled the latest upheaval over abortion rights a further incursion by conservatives into myriad \u2018fundamental rights\u2019 many Americans thought they had.\u201d Harris also <\/span>attacked<\/span><\/a> \u201cthose who would dare to attack fundamental rights and, by extension, attack our democracy,\u201d \u201cextremist leaders who would dare to silence the voices of the people,\u201d and \u201ca United States Supreme Court \u2014 the highest court in our land \u2014 that took a constitutional right that has been recognized from the people of America.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

There are several problems with what the vice president had to say.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pro-life regulations and legislation can hardly be characterized as an \u201cattack [on] the rights of women in America,\u201d because there is no \u201cconstitutional right\u201d to kill preborn children in this country, for women or anyone else. <\/span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i>, the ruling that promulgated the idea that such a right did exist, has been corrected by the nation\u2019s highest court, which <\/span>characterized<\/span><\/a> Roe<\/span><\/i> as having no \u201cgrounding in the constitutional text, history, or precedent\u201d and as having been \u201cegregiously wrong from the start.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Harris <\/span>bemoaned<\/span><\/a> the fact that abortion restrictions encroach upon the rights Americans thought they had, but believing something doesn\u2019t make it correct or moral. Americans once thought they had the right to own slaves \u2013 another faux \u201cright\u201d which was once upheld by an erroneous <\/span>Supreme Court decision<\/span><\/a> \u2013 but simply because Americans believed slavery was acceptable (even necessary to preserve their way of life) did not make that perceived \u201cright\u201d accurate or ethical.<\/span><\/p>\n

Furthermore, Harris\u2019s statement about \u201cextremist leaders who would dare to silence the voices of the people\u201d is also out-of-step with reality. <\/span>Countless<\/span><\/a> polls<\/span><\/a> have <\/span>demonstrated<\/span><\/a> that the <\/span>majority<\/span><\/a> of <\/span>Americans<\/span><\/a> support<\/span><\/a> significant<\/span><\/a> restrictions<\/span><\/a> on abortion. <\/span><\/p>\n

Regarding the recent <\/span>decision<\/span><\/a> in <\/span>Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. U.S. Food and Drug Administration [FDA]<\/span><\/i>, which revoked FDA approval of the abortion pill based on the assertion that the FDA did not adhere to proper protocols, recent <\/span>polling<\/span><\/a> has shown that the majority of Americans distrust the FDA\u2019s process for approving that drug.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, the \u201cvoices of the people\u201d do <\/span>not<\/span><\/i> support Harris\u2019 <\/span>extreme<\/span><\/a> abortion policies.<\/span><\/p>\n
