Maisel was thrilled, and planned to marry her and start a family. Lin, however, had other plans; in the season five premiere, she told Maisel that she was leaving him to pursue a medical residency in Chicago, and that they would not be having a baby together \u2014 insinuating that she had an abortion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qviT857xh1c\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMei always represented to us sort of weirdly like the generation right after Midge, like that generation of going into the \u201860s, of girls starting to step back \u2014 with the advent of the pill \u2014 step back a little bit and started to think a little bit more big picture rather than the immediacy of like, husband, children, this is the road, a little bit [more] like what could the road be?\u201d Amy Sherman-Palladino, the showrunner, told the Hollywood Reporter. \u201cWe wanted her to be a very smart, sharp and ambitious girl who wants to be a doctor at a time where there simply were not women doctors.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the time, abortion was not legal in New York; the show is set in the 1960s, before <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> had been decided in 1973.<\/p>\n<p>The show did not portray Lin as having been harmed by the illegal abortion, and despite claims from abortion advocates, women <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/banning-abortion-literally-kill-women-no\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">did not die<\/a> by the thousands before <em>Roe<\/em>; most illegal abortions, in fact, were committed by trained physicians when women came to them surreptitiously, by way of a practitioner&#8217;s back alley entrance \u2014 thus coining the term &#8220;back alley abortion.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What is <em>less<\/em> accurate, however, is the insinuation that a character \u2014 even a woman in the 1960s \u2014\u00a0could not have been a mother and become a doctor. Women are capable of accomplishing anything they want to, including motherhood, and it is not empowering to argue that women need abortion to be successful in their careers.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aamc.org\/news-insights\/celebrating-10-women-medical-pioneers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pioneering female physicians<\/a> throughout history were mothers, such as Elizabeth Blackwell, Rebecca Lee Crumpler, Mary Putnam Jacobi, Nobel Prize winner Gerty Theresa Cori, and more. Motherhood does not hold women back from achieving their dreams.
