At the appointment, which had been pushed to 30 weeks due to a scheduling error, Claire&#8217;s baby was diagnosed with spina bifida.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cClaire was told on that day terrible news, which she and her partner will never forget, that the baby is badly deformed, will have no quality of life because her brain was badly swollen, and they could not see the spine,\u201d according to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gofundme.com\/f\/life-changing-treatment-for-t-j\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoFundMe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0page written by a friend of the family. \u201cShe was told that her best option would be to go to England to abort her precious baby. The doctors had said that she will live only a few hours.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors, in fact, were unequivocal about her baby\u2019s situation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen I went to my 30 week scan they told me that her head was swollen, and that they didn\u2019t see any life inside her brain, that she was a very sick baby, that there was no hope for her,\u201d Claire told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dublinpeople.com\/news\/dublin\/articles\/2023\/02\/08\/56563\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dublin People<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe were told she would spend 95 per cent of her life in a wheelchair and that she\u2019ll have brain problems and memory loss problems. They didn\u2019t know. They hadn\u2019t a clue. Her vision and everything is perfect, they just gave us a worst case scenario,&#8221; she told the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.ie\/fabulous\/7827315\/baby-tina-joan-needham-donegal-fundraising-miracle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irish Sun<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spina bifida is a type of neural tube defect (NTD) that occurs when a developing preborn baby\u2019s neural tube \u2013 what develops into the brain and spine \u2013 doesn\u2019t close all the way, leading to the spine and spinal cord not developing correctly. There are treatments available for the condition, both in the form of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/successful-prenatal-spina-bifida-egypt\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amazing prenatal surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as well as surgery and treatments once the baby has been born.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-283198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claire refused to give up on her preborn baby, and TJ \u2013 Tina Joan, named after her grandmothers \u2013 was born on October 7, 2020. Two days later she had surgery to close her meningocele, or sac of spinal fluid bulging through the spine. She also had a condition called hydrocephalus, or fluid on the brain, requiring a shunt to drain the excess fluid. But TJ is already defying the odds, far from the bleak picture painted by her doctors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, at two years old, she is doing exceptionally well, though struggling with her legs and her feet due to her condition, as well as some gross motor development. She has challenges, but a far cry from what doctors predicted. Her parents know she is a miracle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe\u2019s absolutely perfect,\u201d her dad, Jay Needham, told <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.echo.ie\/we-didnt-know-what-to-expect-when-tj-was-born\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Echo.ie<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe didn\u2019t know what to expect when she was born. Claire was told not to buy any baby clothes. We\u2019d been told that babies like TJ only survive for an hour or two after birth. But when she was born, she adapted really well to being out of the womb. She\u2019s incredible. She\u2019s such a fighter.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TJ\u2019s next battle is to walk, and Claire is determined to seize the opportunity for her. Friends and family from all over the country have come together to raise the necessary funds to give her little girl the opportunity to walk.
