{"id":288723,"date":"2023-04-07T12:59:23","date_gmt":"2023-04-07T17:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=288723"},"modified":"2023-04-07T12:59:41","modified_gmt":"2023-04-07T17:59:41","slug":"michigan-governor-repeal-abortion-law-lives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/michigan-governor-repeal-abortion-law-lives\/","title":{"rendered":"Michigan governor signs repeal of 1931 abortion law, says protecting abortion &#8216;saved lives&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed legislation Wednesday that repeals the state&#8217;s 1931 &#8220;trigger ban&#8221; on abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The 1931 law <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-ban-michigan-whitmer-1931-repeal-2abb0525618a6ac5ee5a45b02ef4de3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made it a felony<\/a> to assist in an abortion, though it had not been enforceable due to the Supreme Court&#8217;s ruling in <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>. Once Roe was overturned, the law should have gone into effect. However, abortion advocates, including Whitmer, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/michigan-prosecutors-cannot-enforce-1931-law\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">filed lawsuits<\/a> against the law and it was quickly blocked by the courts. Voters in the state later approved a constitutional amendment affirming a &#8220;right to abortion,&#8221; but Democratic lawmakers wanted to pass legislation to cement the repeal of the 1931 law by overturning it outright. That legislation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.detroitnews.com\/story\/news\/local\/michigan\/2023\/04\/05\/whitmer-signs-repeal-of-1931-michigan-law-banning-abortion-ban\/70082111007\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed<\/a> both the Senate and the House last month.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe cannot allow archaic laws to remain on our books under the assumption that they\u2019ll never be used again,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/abortion-ban-michigan-whitmer-1931-repeal-2abb0525618a6ac5ee5a45b02ef4de3b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Democratic state Rep. The state <a href=\"https:\/\/vitalstats.michigan.gov\/osr\/abortion\/summary.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">saw a total<\/a> of\u00a030,074 abortions committed in 2021, and\u00a029,669 in 2020. Based on these numbers, it is likely that approximately 30,000 lives were lost to abortion in 2022. With the repeal of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> in June of 2022, thousands of those lives might have been <em>saved<\/em> had the trigger law, which protects most children from abortion, been allowed to take effect.<\/p>\n<p>Whitmer also touted the bill&#8217;s signing as &#8220;good economics&#8221; \u2014 a phrase she has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/gretchen-whitmer-abortion-good-economics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">used in the past<\/a> to defend abortion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Standing up for people\u2019s fundamental freedoms is the right thing to do and\u00a0it\u2019s also just good economics,&#8221; she said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/whitmer\/news\/press-releases\/2023\/04\/05\/governor-whitmer-repeals-michigans-extreme-1931-abortion-ban#:~:text=LANSING%2C%20Mich.,doctors%20for%20doing%20their%20jobs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>, which included further ironic remarks. &#8220;By getting this done, we will help attract talent and business investment too.
