This\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">includes\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">progestin-only contraceptives such as the mini-pill, levonorgestrel-IUD, implanted rod, and the Depo-provera arm injection. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While progestin-only (also known as progestogen-only) contraception has been<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.verywellhealth.com\/progestin-only-birth-control-methods-906627#:~:text=Progestin%2Donly%20birth%20control%20is%20considered%20safer%20for%20certain%20people,control%20pills%20that%20contain%20estrogen.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as \u201csafer\u201d than the Pill due to its lack of synthetic estrogen\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the culprit behind the increased risks of heart attack, blood clots, and stroke in Pill users\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the results of this new study call into question rather than reinforce that label.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This latest research is particularly timely given that progestin-only contraception is becoming increasingly popular worldwide as of late, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk\/statistical-collections\/prescription-cost-analysis-england\/prescription-cost-analysis-england-202021\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">statistics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the United Kingdom show.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the known risks of progestin-only contraception?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Live Action News has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/fda-considers-first-counter-birth-control-pill\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously reported<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the laundry list of side effects associated with progestin-only contraception, such as increased risk of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26808155\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cervical cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4386952\/#:~:text=WHAT%20THIS%20STUDY%20ADDS,term%20users%20of%20hormonal%20contraceptives.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brain cancer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK539860\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ectopic pregnancies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in women who conceive while using the contraceptive, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2017\/017031s035s036lbl.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ovarian cysts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, irregular bleeding, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2552796\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This latest study validates <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29211679\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> finding an increased risk of breast cancer among users of progestin-only IUDs, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> confirms that progestin-only pills are also associated with increased risk, just as the Pill is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The new study further <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceu.ox.ac.uk\/news\/any-type-of-hormonal-contraceptive-may-increase-risk-of-breast-cancer?mc_cid=8ffcae96d9&amp;mc_eid=a65da3201b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explores<\/span><\/a> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how much<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> breast cancer risk may be increased, for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how long<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">absolute excess risks<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meaning the additional number of women who would be expected to develop breast cancer in those who used oral contraceptives compared to those who did not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who was studied and what did the researchers find?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oxford researchers conducted a case-control study plus meta-analysis (reviewing previous research done on the topic) and conducted new research comparing 9,498 British women under age 50 who developed breast cancer between 1996 and 2017 with 18,171 peers (or \u201ccontrols\u201d) who did not (case-control study). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to a<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ceu.ox.ac.uk\/news\/any-type-of-hormonal-contraceptive-may-increase-risk-of-breast-cancer?mc_cid=8ffcae96d9&amp;mc_eid=a65da3201b\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">press release<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in the case-control study \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there was a significant increase in risk of breast cancer associated with hormonal contraceptive use, regardless of whether the contraceptive last prescribed was a combined (oestrogen and progestogen) oral preparation (23%), a progestogen-only oral preparation (26%), an injected progestogen (25%), or a progestogen-releasing intra-uterine device (32%).\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found that when they added in data from the meta-analysis,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> every<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">form<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of progestin-only contraception \u2014 the<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/college-student-contraceptive-implant-suicidal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">implant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-depo-provera-hazardous-womens-health\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the injection<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the mini-pill, and the levonorgestrel-IUD \u2014\u00a0markedly increased breast cancer risk.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Furthermore, in women who used <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/10-risks-hormonal-birth-control-women-know\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">oral hormonal contraceptives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for five years, absolute excess risk of developing breast cancer during a 15-year timespan \u201cranged from eight in 100,000 women for use from age 16 to 20, to 265 in 100,000 for use from age 35 to 39.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Downplaying of breast cancer-hormonal contraception link<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given the widespread embrace of contraception, the study researchers, as well as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6264847\/hormonal-birth-control-breast-cancer\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts commenting on their findings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, downplayed the importance of the link. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxford Population Health\u2019s statistical programmer Kirstin Pirie acknowledged:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The findings suggest that current or recent use of all types of progestogen-only contraceptives is associated with a slight increase in breast cancer risk, similar to that associated with use of combined oral contraceptives. Given that a person\u2019s underlying risk of developing breast cancer increases with advancing age, the absolute excess risk of breast cancer associated with either type of oral contraceptive will be smaller in women who use it at younger ages.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She added, \u201cThese excess risks must, however, be viewed in the context of the well-established benefits of contraceptive use in women&#8217;s reproductive years.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Claire Knight, Senior Health Information Officer at Cancer Research UK, which funded the study, similarly stated, \u201cCombined and progestogen-only hormonal contraception can increase the risk of breast cancer, but the risk is small\u201d and encouraged hormonal contraception users to lower their breast cancer risk by \u201cnot smoking, eating a healthy balanced diet, drinking less alcohol, and keeping a healthy weight.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knight added, \u201cThere are lots of possible benefits to using contraception, as well as other risks not related to cancer,\u201d but the truth is that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hormonal-birth-control-terrible-cost-teenage-girls\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormonal contraception<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does not and cannot cure underlying health issues such as irregular or painful periods or fibroids, and there are other means of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/birth-control-hormonal-natural-fertility\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family planning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and pregnancy prevention that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/three-reasons-reproductive-cycle-easier-empowering-think\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">don\u2019t involve serious side effects <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and cancer risk.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i><strong>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 people with the truth about abortion that no one else is telling them?
