{"id":288331,"date":"2023-04-01T11:14:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-01T16:14:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=288331"},"modified":"2023-03-31T15:22:06","modified_gmt":"2023-03-31T20:22:06","slug":"nyc-out-of-state-abortion-ads","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nyc-out-of-state-abortion-ads\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC spends $500,000 on out-of-state ads to lure women to its abortion businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2023\/03\/23\/abortion-georgia-billboards-funded-by-new-york-city\/11526061002\/?gnt-cfr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> from USA Today reveals that New York City is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on advertising via billboards and online ads to attract abortion-minded women from out of state.<\/p>\n<p>According to the outlet, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has placed a contract with Lamar billboards to place abortion-friendly messages in Georgia, Texas, and Florida \u2014 three states with a least some level of pro-life protections for preborn children. The department has also planned an ad campaign to run on both Google and Snapchat. Altogether, the total estimated cost of out-of-state advertising totals more than $500,000.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-283198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In New York City, access to abortion care is legal, protected, and a critical component of public health,&#8221; a department spokesperson told USA Today. &#8220;We want anyone who might be in need of reproductive healthcare to know that we&#8217;re here to provide it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The billboards and several of the online ads say &#8220;Abortion. Safe + Legal for All in New York City&#8221; along with the number to the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nyc-abortion-access-phone-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion access hotline<\/a>, which launched in November. That hotline contains specific travel information for women coming in from out of state.<\/p>\n<p>According to USA Today, records show that the billboards have been set up in\u00a0Augusta, Martinez, and Atlanta in Georgia, Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, and Orlando in Florida, and Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio in Texas.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">This sounds like government-sponsored abortion tourism. Gross.<\/p>\n<p>New York City bought billboards in three other states to advertise abortion services <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/zSTvAoycmn\">https:\/\/t.co\/zSTvAoycmn<\/a> via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/USATODAY?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@usatoday<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Ingrid Jacques (@Ingrid_Jacques) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ingrid_Jacques\/status\/1640332261626114048?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 27, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>&#8220;This is the biggest waste of government resources since Andrew Cuomo\u2019s trip to Savannah to lecture us on Covid,\u201d Garrison Douglas, press secretary for Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, said in response to an inquiry about the program.<\/p>\n<p>NYC isn&#8217;t the first abortion-friendly destination to run such an ad campaign. Last September, California Governor Gavin Newsom started a similar initiative when he <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/newsom-billboards-pro-life-abortion-california\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">placed billboards<\/a> in states like\u00a0Ohio, South Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas in an attempt to lure women to California so that they could legally kill their babies there.
