A memo from Massachusetts state officials issued March 22 warned pharmacies in stark terms that they <\/span>must<\/span><\/i> stock and dispense abortion pills.\u00a0<\/span>The <\/span>memo<\/span><\/a> comes from Governor Maura Healy and the Massachusetts Department of Health, citing <\/span>regulations<\/span><\/a> from the state board that oversees pharmacies. <\/span><\/p>\n

The memo issues<\/a> a stern reminder that all licensed pharmacies, by state law, must \u201cmaintain a continuous, sufficient supply of all family planning medications, including mifepristone (Mifeprex\u00ae), misoprostol (Cytotec\u00ae), emergency contraception, and contraceptive prescriptions to meet the needs of the community.\u201d It also threatens consequences for any pharmacist \u201cthat refuses to stock and\/or procure, dispense, and\/or fill any valid prescription and\/or order for family planning medications, or impedes access in any way to any such medications.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite what abortion activists claim, induced\u00a0<\/span>abortion is not health care<\/a>; it is\u00a0<\/span>the direct and intentional ending of a preborn life — which is\u00a0<\/span>not medically necessary<\/span><\/a>. The abortion pill has come under scrutiny in recent days as a <\/span>judge reviews the FDA’s original approval<\/span><\/a> of the abortion drug Mifeprex. The majority<\/a> of abortions are committed via the abortion pill, a drug considered by abortion supporters too essential to allow certain safety measures to get in the way of its dispensation. Abortion industry insiders have advocated for dispensing it to women who <\/span>aren\u2019t pregnant<\/span><\/a>, dispensing it without verifying the baby\u2019s gestational age and <\/span>implantation in the uterus<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>encouraging patients to lie<\/span><\/a> about having taken the pill to conceal potential complications. Complications of the pill are known to be <\/span>vastly underreported<\/span><\/a>, and studies have shown that approximately 6% of women who took the abortion pill ended up seeking treatment in ERs or urgent care as a result of complications.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHere in Massachusetts, we will always protect access to reproductive care, including abortion,\u201d Governor Healey stated in the memo. \u201cAt a time when states are rushing to ban medication abortion and some pharmacies are irresponsibly restricting access to it, we are reminding Massachusetts pharmacies that they have an obligation to provide critical reproductive health medications, including Mifepristone. It\u2019s safe, effective, and legal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The memo comes as the latest of the state of Massachusetts\u2019 enactment of a radical pro-abortion agenda. Shortly after the <\/span>Dobbs<\/span><\/i> decision overturned <\/span>Roe v. Wade<\/span><\/i>, then-governor Charlie Baker <\/span>signed an expansive abortion bill into law<\/span><\/a>. The state has also <\/span>targeted pregnancy resource centers<\/span><\/a>\u00a0offering free and life-affirming services to women and children,\u00a0and a politician came under fire for <\/span>suggesting that abortion is necessary for disabled babies<\/span><\/a>, lest they become drains on the state.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Massachusetts Citizens for Life pushed back against the memo, speaking out against the move in a <\/span>Facebook post<\/span><\/a>. \u201cGovernor Healey, your job is to protect the women and girls of Massachusetts,\u201d it read. \u201cThese abortion drugs have proven to be dangerous, even deadly \u2014 always to an unborn child, and sometimes to a mother. Medical abortion is not healthcare. Don’t force it on our pharmacies.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
