{"id":287982,"date":"2023-03-25T09:16:28","date_gmt":"2023-03-25T14:16:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=287982"},"modified":"2023-03-23T18:45:18","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T23:45:18","slug":"spain-yes-life-march-thousands-celebrate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/spain-yes-life-march-thousands-celebrate\/","title":{"rendered":"Spain\u2019s &#8216;Yes to Life&#8217; march unites thousands to celebrate and promote the right to life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYou can\u2019t be a Catholic and support abortion!\u201d This line is not uncommon among Catholics who stand for life, and it\u2019s no surprise that was one of the chants resounding through the streets of Madrid as a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oneofus.eu\/march-for-life-madrid-spain\/\">reported 50,000 people<\/a>\u00a0participated in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the annual &#8220;Yes to Life&#8221; march.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While normally held on March 25, the International Day for Life, the &#8220;Yes to Life&#8221; march was held early this year, on March 12. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Catholic News Agency <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.catholicnewsagency.com\/news\/253857\/thousands-turn-out-for-pro-life-march-in-spain-to-oppose-laws-that-threaten-human-life\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the march was supported by more than 500 organizations which make up the Yes to Life platform. CNA says that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the sponsoring organizations expressed their opposition to \u2018all laws and practices that threaten life and human nature at any moment of its existence, as well as the businesses and ideologies that sustain them.\u2019\u201d The organizations also\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promised to work so that \u201cno illegitimate and perverse law be in force in our legal system,\u201d advocating \u201cthat Spain must be an advanced nation, progressive in terms of true rights and conservative of objective and perennial values.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lejeune Spain Foundation posted a clip of the march<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> its Twitter page:<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Lo de hoy ha sido\u2764\ufe0f <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/S%C3%ADALaVida?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#S\u00edALaVida<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/HjVGijiOP5\">pic.twitter.com\/HjVGijiOP5<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Fundaci\u00f3n J\u00e9r\u00f4me Lejeune Espa\u00f1a (@FundLejeuneES) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FundLejeuneES\/status\/1634928197124120578?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 12, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As evidenced from even this short video, the march took a \u201ccelebratory\u201d tone. However, as OneofUs.eu reports, it wasn\u2019t all celebrating, as there was a heavy and important message.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As recently as last month, Spain\u2019s parliament expanded abortion access in the nation that decriminalized abortion in 1985, as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20220327-thousands-protest-against-abortion-in-madrid\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reported last year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by France24.com<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The latest legislation, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/world\/spain-parliament-approves-menstrual-leave-teen-abortion-and-transgender-protections\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to PBS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cbuilds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spain\u2019s recent move now permits 16- and 17-year-olds to have abortions <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/spain-minors-abortions-consent\/\">with no parental consent<\/a>. It also allows state-run health centers to offer free hormonal contraceptives and the morning after pill. In addition, PBS adds, the recent changes, \u201censhrine in law the right to have an abortion in a state hospital. Currently more than 80% of termination procedures in Spain are carried out in private clinics due to a high number of doctors in the public system who refuse to perform them \u2014 with many citing religious reasons.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-life doctors are permitted to opt-out of committing abortions if they have previously registered objections in writing, the story reports; however, the expansion alone makes killing preborn babies even easier than it was a year ago in the heavily Catholic nation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, the &#8220;Yes to Life&#8221; rally both celebrated life and raised awareness of the human right to life from fertilization onward.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Multitudinaria manifestaci\u00f3n en Madrid contra la &quot;cultura de la muerte&quot; de leyes como la del aborto y la eutanasia <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Sf4ajkTDVN\">https:\/\/t.co\/Sf4ajkTDVN<\/a> a trav\u00e9s de <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EP_Social?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@ep_social<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; S\u00ed a la Vida (@Sialavida_Es) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sialavida_Es\/status\/1635329948843139072?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 13, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Catholic News Agency also reports on powerful testimonies of women who found hope and help from pro-lifers in Spain. This included stories of Marita and Melissa, both of whom were recommended by their social workers for abortions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marita, appearing with her son, Santiago, said when she discovered she was pregnant, a social worker suggested abortion, but she encountered 40 Days for Life volunteers and this ultimately saved Santiago\u2019s life. \u201cThey helped me make the decision. I went over to them myself and asked them for help\u2026&#8221; she said. &#8220;I decided not to go [into the abortion clinic]. Today I am here with my son, which is the best thing that could have happened to me.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Melissa, another participant, took the stage, pregnant with her fourth child. \u201cThe social worker [asked] me what am I going to do with so many children, where am I going; that [abortion] is the ideal thing to do,\u201d she said. Instead, she reportedly \u201c talked to the John Paul II Rescuers and More Future Foundation volunteers, who gave her the support she needed to continue with her pregnancy.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testimonies like this are why pro-lifers continue to fight. The value of human life is what makes up Yes to Life\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/oneofus.eu\/march-for-life-madrid-spain\/\">manifesto<\/a>; the document was read by different representatives of the 500 organizations supporting the event. All declared and agreed that \u201chuman beings have the right to life and to be treated as their dignity deserves, from their conception to natural death and at all times and in all circumstances.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Day of Life, as One of Us notes, began in 2003 in Madrid as a result of \u201ca global survey answered by more than 20,000 groups and associations from more than 20 countries in Europe and America, [where] it was agreed to declare March 25 the International Day of Life.\u201d By 2011, the groups and associations \u201cagreed to create a platform with the name and motto Yes to Life, which each year would celebrate a public and unitary act around March 25, International Day of Life, with the color green hope, so that all organizations could see it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CNA reports that the march concluded with the participants \u201creleasing balloons into the air following a minute of silence during which only the heartbeat of a baby obtained from a live ultrasound was heard.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 people with the truth about abortion that no one else is telling them?
