With the &#8220;quick and easy&#8221; chemical abortion process under threat, abortion advocates have curiously pivoted to claiming that abortion pills are needed so women don&#8217;t have to go through &#8220;traumatizing&#8221; surgical abortions instead.<\/p>\n<p>A meme is circulating on Twitter in response to the new Wyoming legislation. It reads, &#8220;When your precious little girl is raped [and] instead of taking an extremely safe [and] effective pill, she&#8217;s forced to be <em><strong>retraumatized by an intrusive surgical procedure<\/strong><\/em> for no reason other than that fascist Republican extremists want to punish women [and] girls!&#8221; the meme reads. &#8220;Who will stand up for me? Answer: Democrats.&#8221; (emphasis added)<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Wyoming&#39;s Republican Governor Mark Gordon signed into law a bill restricting abortions and outlawing the use of abortion pills. Red States are racing to ban the abortion pill. Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans want to restrict abortions nationwide. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Vz7VRBgJrp\">pic.twitter.com\/Vz7VRBgJrp<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Tony &#8211; Resistance (@TonyHussein4) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TonyHussein4\/status\/1637099080504471554?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 18, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Putting aside the notion that abortion is somehow &#8220;necessary&#8221; to &#8220;fix&#8221; the trauma of rape \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/rape-horrific-trauma-abortion-cannot-heal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">harmful myth<\/a> \u2014 this is a strange turn in reasoning for abortion advocates. After all, they&#8217;ve spent years assuring us that abortions are no big deal, comparing surgical abortion procedures to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/amanda-marcotte-babies-are-time-sucking-monsters-abortion-like-removing-a-cavity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">removing cavities<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.glamour.com\/story\/lindy-west-why-i-wont-hide-my-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">wisdom teeth<\/a>. These actually are rather <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/democratic-congresswoman-abortion-wisdom-teeth-extraction\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">popular<\/a> comparisons, with abortion advocates frequently saying that going to get a surgical abortion is so easy, and so <em>not<\/em> a big deal, that it&#8217;s just like <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/clinic-worker-id-rather-have-several-abortions-than-go-to-the-dentist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">going to the dentist<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p>The Planned Parenthood website, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.plannedparenthood.org\/learn\/abortion\/in-clinic-abortion-procedures\/what-happens-during-an-in-clinic-abortion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meanwhile<\/a>, also heavily\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/planned-parenthood-hiding-truth-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">downplays<\/a> what surgical abortions are like. A dilation and curettage (D&amp;C) \u2014 a first-trimester surgical abortion procedure \u2014 is described as something that &#8220;only takes about 5 to 10 minutes&#8221; and that afterwards, you just &#8220;hang out&#8221; in a recovery room. <em>No big deal!<\/em> And the baby is (of course) &#8220;gently&#8221; removed from the mother&#8217;s uterus, according to the nation&#8217;s most prolific abortion business.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Hi-Kc5HLHP8\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>A dilation and evacuation (D&amp;E) is the most common abortion procedure committed in the second trimester. Under best practices, it&#8217;s a process that takes several days, as the abortionist has to use laminaria to slowly dilate the woman&#8217;s cervix. However, Planned Parenthood describes it as taking &#8220;between 10 and 20 minutes,&#8221; and again, concludes with hanging out in the recovery room. And as opposed to using a sopher clamp to rip the preborn child apart limb by limb, the abortionist will merely &#8220;use a combination of medical tools to remove the pregnancy tissue out of your uterus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/eR1Ut4BPbOw\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>So why, all of a sudden, are abortion advocates portraying surgical abortions as traumatizing, when before, they were telling women how easy and carefree it is to undergo them?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a clear compare-and-contrast strategy: <em>convince people to support abortion pills so women don&#8217;t have to get those big, scary, surgical abortions.<\/em> But there&#8217;s a problem with this: abortions can be traumatizing, regardless of the <em>type<\/em> of\u00a0procedure.<\/p>\n<p>Where it&#8217;s a <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/after-dc-suction-aspiration-abortion-i-saw-remains-of-my-baby-in-bucket\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">D&amp;C<\/a> or the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/cosmopolitan-abortion-pill-traumatic-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion pill<\/a>, an abortion is never risk-free and easy. Even abortionists have <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-abortion-pill-freaked-out-recognizable-aborted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">admitted<\/a> that chemical abortions can be traumatic \u2014 not just because of the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-40-percent-women-pain-abortion-pill\/\">excruciating pain<\/a>, but because women often give birth to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/women-abortion-pill-freaked-out-recognizable-aborted\/\">recognizably human remains<\/a>&#8230; and no one told them to expect it. In addition, the abortion pill regimen has been found to be\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/study-abortion-pill-four-times-dangerous-surgical\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">four times more dangerous<\/a> than a surgical abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Abortion is traumatic. But when abortion advocates begin to admit what pro-lifers have been saying all along, it&#8217;s time to ask ourselves why they&#8217;re saying it.
