In her memoir<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Ada Love<\/span>\u00a0wrote\u00a0about the painful aftermath<\/a> of an abortion she had in 1981 at age 20.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pregnant by an Abusive Man and Coerced into an Abortion<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Love was raised in a religious home. \u201cIf the doors of the church were open, we were there,\u201d she said. She accepted Jesus as a child and was very active in her church.<\/span><\/p>\n

After becoming engaged to an abusive man she thought she was in love with, she learned she was pregnant four months before the wedding. She explained,<\/span> \u201cI believed I was in love. I was dependent on this love.\u201d When she told her fianc\u00e9 that she was pregnant, he said,<\/span> \u201c<\/b>You\u2019ll get rid of it\u2014you\u2019ll have an abortion.\u201d He ordered her to \u201ctake care of the problem.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Love said, \u201cI just nodded, not saying a word. The conversation was closed. The decision had already been made. Sadness and a feeling of darkness became a constant companion in the days to come.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Pressure and Fear<\/strong><\/h4>\n

At the abortion facility, staff pressured her to make an appointment right away. She was nearing her second trimester, and they told her time was running out to have a suction abortion<\/a>, even though abortion was legal late in pregnancy in her state.<\/span><\/p>\n

Love feared how her Christian friends and family would react to her pregnancy before marriage. She said she \u201cbelieved the lies that the rejection and humiliation I would feel \u2026 would be more unbearable than having an abortion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, she begged her fianc\u00e9 to change his mind:<\/span><\/p>\n

I pleaded, \u201cWe can\u2019t do this. This is our child, our flesh and blood. We can\u2019t kill our child.\u201d\u2026<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I wanted him to say, \u201cYou\u2019re right, we can\u2019t do this. I want this child; it is ours.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Oh, I wanted him to say this, but he didn\u2019t. He said, \u201cYou have to\u2014there is no choice.\u201d<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

I cried like I had never cried before.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Having the Abortion<\/strong><\/h4>\n

The first time Love went to the abortion facility, she walked out. But she ultimately returned and went through with the abortion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One woman in the waiting room was holding a baby. After her abortion, Love heard the same woman crying hysterically. She asked an abortion worker about it, and the worker told her the woman was crying because she regretted her abortion.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHer cries were filled with pain\u2026 Her cries were expressing what my heart was really feeling\u2026” said Love.<\/span><\/p>\n
