{"id":287635,"date":"2023-03-20T08:36:09","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T13:36:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=287635"},"modified":"2023-03-21T18:01:04","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T23:01:04","slug":"abortion-abolitionist-assaulted-threatened","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-abolitionist-assaulted-threatened\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion abolitionist says he was assaulted by off-duty officer in Kansas"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>In a video released by the group\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abolitionistsrising.com\/?fbclid=IwAR1aX64TXL4X_pFhBYrcjZyke4XUSIQWVnmW9UiWZj6sdybiaryAwQXDqQU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Abolitionists Rising<\/a>, an abortion abolitionist was confronted and assaulted by a passerby, who, at the start of the video, had been standing a short distance away from the abolitionists. The incident took place at The Keeper of the Plains Monument in Wichita, Kansas on March 4, 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The video started with a woman moving toward an abolitionist who was holding a camera. She yelled, &#8220;No,&#8221; and told him, &#8220;You are not taking pictures of us. That is not right.&#8221; While the abolitionist replied that he was not taking photos of her, a man came from behind the woman, and appeared to knock the camera out of the abolitionist&#8217;s hands, smashing it to the ground, where it broke. The man, allegedly an off-duty police officer, accused the abolitionist of harassing him after the abolitionist accused him of injuring his thumb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\u00a0<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=314&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FAbolitionistsRising%2Fvideos%2F947443426694495%2F&amp;show_text=false&amp;width=560&amp;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The man then asked the group if they had a permit to assemble, and an abolitionist named Nathan replied, &#8220;It&#8217;s called the First Amendment, sir.&#8221; He asked the man for his name so they could file a police report, but he did not give them information. Nathan then told him that he would be following the man to his car to get his license plate number, so the abolitionists would have information to give to the police.<\/p>\n<p>The man replied on video, &#8220;Nah, if you follow me to my car, it&#8217;s not gonna end very well for you.&#8221; He then said, &#8220;You&#8217;re gonna get your a** whooped.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Still, the abolitionists continued to say they would follow the man to his car unless he paid for the broken camera. He walked away, and another man told him, &#8220;Yeah, unfortunately, you have no right to privacy in a public space like this.&#8221; The man accused the abolitionist of having approached him.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As the abolitionist followed behind the man who broke the camera, the man turned and told him that &#8220;everybody else has asked you to leave them alone.&#8221; He continued to warn the abolitionists not to follow him, though they said they would do so to get his license plate number as some form of identification due to the damage done to the camera.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wouldn&#8217;t follow me to my vehicle, I promise you,&#8221; he said. &#8220;You are gonna lose that battle \u2014 physically, legally? It doesn&#8217;t f****in&#8217; matter to me. You are going to lose that battle.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The situation appeared to escalate, as the abolitionist continued to follow the man to his car.
