Before the legislation, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/poland-abortions-children-disabilities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">virtually 100%<\/a> of abortions in Poland were committed on preborn children with disabilities. And babies who survived the abortion process were often <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/polish-baby-survives-abortion-cries-hour-left-die\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">left to die<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yet many abortion advocates still spent the autumn of 2020 protesting, including in Pozna\u0144 Cathedral. Mass was in progress when the protesters began rushing towards the altar, chanting &#8220;My Body, My Choice&#8221; in Polish. The priest asked them not to interrupt Mass, but this request was ignored as they stood in front of the altar, throwing papers into the air and yelling.<\/p>\n<p>The leaflets they threw into the air <a href=\"https:\/\/notesfrompoland.com\/2021\/12\/30\/trial-begins-for-abortion-protests-accused-of-interfering-with-religious-act-in-church\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">promoted abortion<\/a>, and their signs read &#8220;Abortion is not a sin.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"pl\" dir=\"ltr\">Pozna\u0144. Wi\u0119cej w relacji: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/LlqEGUhUBU\">https:\/\/t.co\/LlqEGUhUBU<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EpiskopatNews?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@EpiskopatNews<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Abp_Gadecki?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Abp_Gadecki<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/aborcja?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#aborcja<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/piek%C5%82okobiet?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#piek\u0142okobiet<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/T5cp18RIwc\">pic.twitter.com\/T5cp18RIwc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Piotr \u017bytnicki (@PiotrZytnicki) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PiotrZytnicki\/status\/1320369649930960896?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 25, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>Ultimately, police had to be called in order to get the protest to stop, and prosecutors charged all 32 protesters with \u201cmaliciously interfering with the public performance of a religious act jointly and in cooperation,&#8221; which carries a sentence of a fine, community service, or up to two years in prison.<\/p>\n<p>According to Notes From Poland, one of the protesters, Arkadiusz K., said he participated in the protest because \u201c[i]t\u2019s not the first time that&#8230; the Catholic church is interfering in my life and the life of my friends and colleagues.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yet a Pozna\u0144 district court judge found them all not guilty.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese were the largest demonstrations in Poland since the political changes in 1989 and, in the opinion of some commentators, the largest street protests in the history of Poland,\u201d Judge Joanna Knobel said, and insinuated that the archbishop of Pozna\u0144, Stanis\u0142aw G\u0105decki, invited the protests because he expressed support for the pro-life legislation. She further claimed that \u201cthe evidence did not show that their intentions were motivated by malice, i.e. the desire to annoy, hurt, or cause unpleasant feelings in another person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Knobel seemed to indicate that she has pro-abortion leanings herself, saying the ruling &#8220;in effect violated women\u2019s rights,&#8221; that the \u201cchurch hierarchs approved of that ruling,&#8221; and that \u201cconstitutional separation of state and church is commonly violated.&#8221; And yet despite all of that, she said the protesters were not being disrespectful of the church.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;None of the defendants showed contempt for the performance of the religious act itself, nor for the place where this religious act was performed,&#8221; she said. \u201cThe protesters wanted to show what they think about the disputed issue, to express their position on the judgment of the Constitutional Tribunal, the archbishop\u2019s words and the church\u2019s involvement in politics.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said they are still considering whether or not to appeal the ruling.<\/p>\n<p>Protests have continued in Poland since then, including occasional <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/pro-life-activist-attacked-poland\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">violent protests<\/a>, though pro-lifers vowed to keep fighting. \u201cDespite these attacks, it is our duty to preach the truth,\u201d Fundacja Pro board member Mariusz Dzier\u017cawski said in 2022. \u201cThe bandits who support abortion are also ready to attack those who have already been born.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i><strong>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 people with the truth about abortion that no one else is telling them?
