{"id":287236,"date":"2023-03-17T10:37:27","date_gmt":"2023-03-17T15:37:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=287236"},"modified":"2023-03-21T00:28:53","modified_gmt":"2023-03-21T05:28:53","slug":"nicu-nurse-adopts-triplets-teen","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nicu-nurse-adopts-triplets-teen\/","title":{"rendered":"NICU nurse adopts premature triplets&#8230; and their teen mom: &#8216;I wanted them to stay together&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After spending 23 years caring for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) infants and their families, nurse Katrina Mullen has officially become an adoptive mother of a teen mom <em>and<\/em> her three babies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mullen, who works at Community Hospital North in Indianapolis, met the 14-year-old mother, Shariya Small, when she gave birth to her three premature babies at 26 weeks gestation. The triplets \u2013 a boy and two girls \u2013 weighed less than two pounds each at birth and had to spend four months in the NICU. During that time, Mullen formed a close bond with the young mother.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you need anything, I will be there for you,\u201d Mullen, who herself had been a teen mother, told Small, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scrubsmag.com\/nicu-nurse-adopts-teen-mom-of-three-preemie-triplets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scrubs Mag<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI immediately thought that I needed to give her a shoulder to lean on.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Small visited her babies in the NICU every day, Mullen was there for her. &#8220;I would go sit in the office with her and talk about basically anything,&#8221; Small said, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/UwuuX#selection-683.0-686.0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indy Star<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. &#8220;I would tell her some of my secrets and she talked to me about her experiences with being a teen mom. The two would regularly talk on FaceTime, where Mullen offered parenting advice. She sent sleepers and chairs for the babies, and she would often make an hour-long drive from her home in Brownsburg to visit Small and her babies in Kokomo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople would ask me if I had brought those babies home with me yet, or \u2018how is my adopted daughter doing?\u2019 because people knew that I was keeping in touch with her,\u201d Mullen said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One day, when Small\u2019s son required a trip to the hospital, Mullen agreed to look after Small\u2019s two daughters. During the hospitalization, the Indiana Department of Child Services conducted an investigation into the living conditions in Small\u2019s home and determined that her children needed to be placed in foster care, which prompted Small to call Mullen in a state of panic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-283198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mullen, who has five children of her own, including two in high school and a 7-year-old, decided to take in the young mother and her babies as her own. \u201cJust from being a nurse, I knew there would not be many foster homes that would take a teen mother with three kids\u2026 I didn\u2019t want them to be separated. I wanted them to stay together,\u201d Mullen explained.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since officially adopting the triplets and their mother, Mullen says that they have all adjusted well to their new life together. The babies are healthy and thriving, and Small, who is now 15, was even able to go back to school and is on track to graduate this year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEverybody told me that I wouldn&#8217;t finish school, that I wouldn&#8217;t achieve my goals, but now I&#8217;m graduating as a junior and was accepted into two colleges with academic scholarships,\u201d Small said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the sacrifices involved in taking in her adopted daughter, Mullen has no regrets. &#8220;It&#8217;s been great,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Stressful? Yes. Sleepless nights? Yes. But worth it?
