Last week, a Maryland House committee approved a constitutional amendment to create a ‘right’ to abortion in the state’s constitution.<\/p>\n

House Bill 705<\/a>,\u00a0would guarantee to \u201cevery person … the fundamental right to reproductive freedom,\u201d including the ability to \u201cprevent, continue or end one\u2019s own pregnancy.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis bill is about the right of a woman to make the fundamental decision about her own pregnancy,\u201d said<\/a> House Health and Government Operations Chair Joseline Pe\u00f1a-Melnyk. \u201cThis bill is about giving Marylanders the decision about the fundamental right of reproductive freedom [and] should it be enshrined in our state constitution. It is the highest level of protection we can give.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to clarify that the bill does not change Maryland\u2019s current law which provides that the decision about abortion rests with the woman in consultation with her provider,\u201d Pe\u00f1a-Melnyk also mentioned. \u201c… This bill is about a woman\u2019s right to choose what we do with our body, when and where.\u201d<\/p>\n
