The council also advanced a resolution reaffirming a\u00a0&#8220;right to privacy in women\u2019s health care decisions.&#8221; Both measures were <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SheCarriesOn\/status\/1584950587983994880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1584950587983994880%7Ctwgr%5E5b74fb123bc0929540f52c319f797f18bdebc7e3%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.wmnf.org%2Fst-petersburg-city-leaders-to-consider-abortion-decriminalization-resolution-and-donating-to-local-abortion-fund%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> by council member Richie Floyd in October.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tampabay.com\/news\/st-petersburg\/2023\/02\/23\/st-petersburg-abortion-womens-rights-tampa-bay-health-care\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tampa Bay Times<\/a>, all three council members sitting on the\u00a0Health, Energy, Resilience, and Sustainability committee voted in favor of the request, which would take money from the city&#8217;s general fund and give it to the Tampa Bay Abortion Fund to be used to help women wishing to travel to abort children older than 15 weeks gestation, which is the current cutoff per state law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/F4rFaUUYVIs\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs of right now, reproductive health care is under attack in this country,\u201d Floyd previously said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wmnf.org\/st-petersburg-city-leaders-to-consider-abortion-decriminalization-resolution-and-donating-to-local-abortion-fund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WMNF<\/a>. \u201cI think it\u2019s really important that the city shows that we don\u2019t support that, and we want to make sure that people can overcome hurdles to getting reproductive healthcare.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Floyd also noted that while the city council <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/equalityfl\/photos\/a.10151239617050346\/10163731588500346\/?type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed a resolution<\/a> in 2020 stating its support for abortion, he believes an additional resolution is necessary to affirm that there will be <em>no documentation or recordkeeping<\/em> on women seeking abortion. This would mean abortion would be the only &#8220;medical&#8221; procedure for which no records are kept \u2014 a potentially dangerous proposition for women.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-283198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>\u201c<\/b>I\u2019ve been working on this for a long time and trying to find out what the most strong message we can send as a city was legally in the state,\u201d he said. \u201cIt did take a while for me to come to the conclusion of what was legally possible and build support for it,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Although a 2016 state law prohibits the use of taxpayer funding for abortion, city council members believe they have found a workaround in donating to the Tampa Bay Abortion Fund, because the fund isn&#8217;t directly affiliated with any abortion business. Chief Assistant City Attorney Jeannine Williams believes in an interpretation of the law that allows taxpayer funding for this purpose, noting that she is ready to defend the city&#8217;s potential use of the money should it be challenged in court.\u00a0\u201cWe believe in our interpretation. It wouldn\u2019t be a successful lawsuit,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Floyd reiterated this support.\u00a0\u201cWe\u2019re perfectly within our legal bounds to do this. If someone wants to cause an issue about it, you know, that\u2019s on them,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re going to be wasting their time and money, in my opinion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cState funds, government funds are going towards the criminalization of abortion, and we can\u2019t really do much to stop that,\u201d he went on. \u201cBut what we\u00a0<i>can\u00a0<\/i>do is donate city money to help people get the reproductive health care that they need in a legal way, and overcome the logistic hurdles and make sure that less people are criminalized.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In order for the funding request to be formalized, it needs to pass a full council vote and get approval from Mayor Ken Welch.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i><strong>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 people with the truth about abortion that no one else is telling them?
