On Monday, the Pompous One managed to set a new low for demagogic hypocrisy.<\/p>\n<p>At <i>Slate<\/i>, she <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2013\/03\/11\/women_s_issues_taboo_explains_why_feminist_men_don_t_speak_up_more.html\">wrote<\/a> about the \u201ctaboo\u201d against men opining on so-called women\u2019s issues, which she and blogger Nico Lang attribute to cultural stereotypes about masculinity, thanks to which \u201cmen may feel pressure to portray themselves as louts who barely tolerate women as the price to pay for sex,\u201d while \u201cother men, who feel differently, stay silent.\u201d There\u2019s plenty of nuttiness to work with right there &#8211; for instance, I\u2019ve never felt pressure from anyone to express antipathy toward women; maybe that\u2019s because traditional conservative cultures really do have a healthier view of gender and sexuality than liberal cesspools?<\/p>\n<p>But, this being an Amanda Marcotte diatribe, her real point is that men <i>should<\/i> be stigmatized out of the discussion\u2026if they disagree with her:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The taboo he describes only applies to men who talk about \u201cwomen\u2019s issues\u201d from a pro-woman perspective. For men who want to attack and undermine women, admitting that you think about such topics is suddenly no longer an embarrassment. If you want to write books telling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0062190989\/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0062190989&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;tag=slatmaga-20\">women to be more submissive<\/a> or encouraging men to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;field-keywords=pick-up%20artist&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;rh=n%3A283155%2Ck%3Apick-up%20artist&amp;tag=slatmaga-20&amp;url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks\">think of women as gatekeepers that need to be tricked into sex<\/a>, you might as well be printing your own money. If you want to scold women for having abortions, using birth control, or delaying marriage, you might have a shot at <a href=\"http:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/health\/2011\/08\/05\/289117\/hannity-blasts-insurance-coverage-for-birth-control-defends-viagra-that-is-a-medical-problem\/\">becoming a<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2012\/03\/03\/bill-oreilly-sandra-fluke-limbaugh_n_1318249.html\">wealthy cable news<\/a> host. If controlling women&#8217;s bodies is a singular obsession for you, it <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thenation.com\/article\/171614\/go-your-womb-ross-douthat\">might land you a regular column<\/a> in the New York Times. When it comes to what rights women should not get to have, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/xx_factor\/2012\/02\/16\/issa_s_first_panel_of_witnesses_on_contraception_hearings_included_no_women_.html\">you can even shut women out of the conversation<\/a>. The gender lopsidedness of this\u2014where most male voices on women&#8217;s issues are reactionary, hateful, and sexist\u2014ends up creating the erroneous impression that men and women are at loggerheads on all these topics.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Regarding Marcotte\u2019s first link, I\u2019ve never heard of Steve Harvey and can\u2019t comment on her characterization of his book. Her second link\u2019s revelation that there\u2019s a market for guides to cheap, no-commitment sex is indeed regrettable, but it\u2019s not exactly news that it\u2019s easy to get crap published, so we shouldn\u2019t overestimate the significance of a simple Amazon book search. Her search for \u201cpick-up artist\u201d yields 1,205 results, but a search for &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/s\/ref=nb_sb_noss_2?url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&amp;field-keywords=9%2F11+truth&amp;rh=n%3A283155%2Ck%3A9%2F11+truth\">9\/11 truth&#8221;<\/a> yields 1,387 (and odds are that a fair portion of both numbers comprises legitimate works that happen to share some wording). Besides, isn\u2019t the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsrealblog.com\/2010\/08\/02\/8-ways-fascist-feminists-are-ruining-americas-women\/\">modern feminist position<\/a> to <i>support<\/i> cheap, no-commitment sex as an <a href=\"http:\/\/pjmedia.com\/blog\/in-defense-of-slut-shaming\/?singlepage=true\">unjudgeable good<\/a> when women are the ones who want it?<\/p>\n<p>Admittedly, the average liberal\u2019s views on sex <i>are<\/i> more enlightened and sensitive to women than, say, Marcotte\u2019s own musings on <a href=\"http:\/\/twitchy.com\/2013\/02\/20\/femme-a-gogue-dimwit-amanda-marcotte-only-an-idiot-thinks-shooting-a-rapist-prevents-rape\/\">self-defense against rapists<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsrealblog.com\/2010\/05\/08\/out-female-genital-mutilation-in-female-genital-nicking-says-american-academy-of-pediatrics\/\">genital mutilation<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>More importantly, to lump tawdry sexual exploitation in with reasonable positions about unborn babies\u2019 right to life, the injustice of dictating private insurance policies, the wisdom of keeping sex within marriage, and the socio-economic importance of nations\u2019 birthrates is as intellectually lazy as it is ethically bankrupt. To seriously argue that they constitute \u201cattack[ing] and undermin[ing] women\u201d and are \u201creactionary, hateful, and sexist\u201d only underscores the depth of Marcotte\u2019s hatred and her disinterest in anything resembling honesty and fairness.<\/p>\n<p>Even more dishonest is Marcotte\u2019s line about shutting women out of conversations, which War on Women mythology teaches Republican Rep. Darrell Issa did by rejecting poor Sandra Fluke\u2019s bid to testify on the Obama administration\u2019s contraception mandate. As Kristi Burton Brown <a href=\"\/news\/sandra-fluke-spews-her-blatant-lies-again-at-the-dnc\/\">noted here back in September<\/a>, two women <i>did<\/i> testify, but to feminazis, they didn\u2019t count as <i>real<\/i> women because they opposed the mandate. And <a href=\"http:\/\/washingtonexaminer.com\/gop-dems-played-games-over-sandra-fluke\/article\/1158036#.UEgEzEQsTbk\">according to<\/a> the <i>Washington Examiner\u2019s<\/i> Byron York, Fluke was a last-minute switch by the Democrats, who originally asked &#8211; and got &#8211; Republicans to take Rev. Barry Lynn as their pro-mandate witness, then wanted to switch to Fluke (who had no credentials on the panel\u2019s subject, religious liberty) at the last minute, all to fabricate a talking point for hacks to endlessly feed their unthinking followers.<\/p>\n<p>As a final bit of irony, on Monday Marcotte also <a href=\"http:\/\/rhrealitycheck.org\/article\/2013\/03\/11\/how-abortion-restrictions-always-assume-that-women-are-bad-people\/\">had a piece<\/a> up at RH Reality Check, which regurgitates her usual shtick about concern for the unborn being a pretext for hating women (because being a pro-choice blogger means never having to come up with anything original). But what most failed the laugh test was her whining that \u201cthe right routinely wants to make abortion a matter of a woman\u2019s character\u201d:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>You can\u2019t look out for people while assuming the worst of them at every turn. All they\u2019re doing is exploiting and reinforcing nasty stereotypes about women while restricting women\u2019s rights.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Yes, those sentences actually occurred in the same article that also contains the statement, \u201cby and large the support for abortion restrictions comes from internalized misogyny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rather than a sad reality she wishes were otherwise, \u201ccorrals and silences men\u201d might as well be Amanda Marcotte\u2019s mission statement. But while she may be the most cartoonishly pompous about it, she\u2019s really just following standard pro-abort procedure.
