Another story has begun to touch hearts as well, as video leaked of heroic NICU nurses taking action to save the lives of premature infants, even at the risk of their own.<\/p>\n<p>Fatma \u015eahin, a Turkish politician and mayor of Gaziantep, shared a video on Twitter, which quickly went viral. In it, nurses Devlet Nizam and Gazel \u00c7al\u0131\u015fkan can be seen rushing into the neonatal intensive care unit and holding the incubators steady, instead of running for safety, while the 7.8 magnitude earthquake raged. They didn&#8217;t let go until the shaking stopped.<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">When the earthquake struck in Turkey, these two nurses dropped everything \u2014 to protect innocent newborns.<\/p>\n<p>The whole building was shaking, but they never left the babies&#39; side.<\/p>\n<p>The nurses names are Devlet Nizam and Gazel \u00c7al\u0131\u015fkan.<\/p>\n<p>Know their names. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/2EZ0JHp92a\">pic.twitter.com\/2EZ0JHp92a<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Goodable (@Goodable) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Goodable\/status\/1624849017091014657?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/teenager-rescued-rubble-turkey-10-days-after-quake-2023-02-16\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>, millions of people have been left homeless, as the death toll reached over 39,000 in Turkey and nearly 6,000 in Syria. Many survivors are questioning how this was even able to happen.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was said to be earthquake-safe, but you can see the result,&#8221; Hamza Alpaslan told Reuters of the Ronesans Rezidans apartment building, which crumbled in the earthquake with hundreds of people inside. &#8220;It&#8217;s in horrible condition. There is neither cement nor proper iron in it. It&#8217;s a real hell.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Ghanaian soccer star Christian Atsu lived in the building, and is one of the people still missing. In addition to playing for the Ghanaian national team, Atsu played for Hatayspor, a Turkish soccer team. He had elected to stay home after having won a major game for his team, despite originally planning to leave. &#8220;This was his destiny. He had a ticket to go but because he scored, he changed his mind about leaving,&#8221; Hatayspor club manager Fatih Ilek said. &#8220;He was caught in an earthquake on his happiest day.&#8221; His agent <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iAmNana7\/status\/1625486755796488194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reported<\/a> that his room has been found, along with several pairs of his shoes, but Atsu himself remains missing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI still pray, and believe that he is alive,\u201d Claire Rupio, his partner, told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/sport\/africa\/64603833\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BBC News<\/a>. \u201cI appeal for the Hatayspor club, the Turkish authorities and the British government to send out the equipment to get people out of the rubble \u2014 especially my partner and father of my children.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Jim Chaston, a firefighter from Kent, is one of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/uk-england-kent-64680895\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">77 firefighters<\/a> from the United Kingdom who traveled to Turkey to help the rescue effort. &#8220;It&#8217;s a rollercoaster of emotions. But if you allow yourself [to be] wrapped up in the moment, you&#8217;re ineffective,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The elation of being able to pull someone out of a collapsed building is actually quite short-lived. For every one you&#8217;re able to be successful on, there&#8217;s another 10 in the next hour where you have to have that difficult conversation that at this moment in time, we can&#8217;t find any signs of life in that building.
