On her April 13th MSNBC show<\/a>, Rachel Maddow made the following observation: \u201cThe thing that no one really seems to be saying is, hey, it\u2019s also really important that Planned Parenthood is able to provide access to abortion. Do you think that is emerging as a political problem here, that people – there aren\u2019t enough people standing up specifically for the abortion rights side of this fight?\u201d<\/p>\n

Maddow was speaking to Cecile Richards, the president of Planned Parenthood. As she always does, Richards dodged the question by changing the subject. \u201cWell, I think folks are very familiar with Planned Parenthood that we provide full reproductive health care in America. And that\u2019s really important,\u201d she answered.\u00a0 \u201cBut I think what is important, too, Rachel, that folks understand that literally what the House of Representatives and what Speaker Boehner are trying to do is \"\"not end abortion services. They are literally trying to eliminate birth control and cancer screenings for women.\u201d<\/p>\n

Once again, Richards said: \u201cThey are literally trying to eliminate birth control and cancer screenings for women.\u201d And to put this in context, Richards had just finished complaining about others making outrageous statements. So this was a serious answer. Amazing.<\/p>\n

What the House of Representatives and Speaker Boehner are trying to do is deny federal funding to Planned Parenthood. And if successful, Planned Parenthood would still be free to provide birth control and cancer screenings for women. More importantly, however, is the fact that nationwide there are over 8,000<\/a> community health center delivery sites, compared to only 800<\/a> Planned Parenthood sites. And community health centers, compared to Planned Parenthood, provide a wider array of health care services — and for the vast majority, no abortion. So despite Richards\u2019 best efforts to divert attention with false accusations against Republicans, and false claims that Planned Parenthood is the only health care provider available for many women, the issue here is abortion, an issue she refuses to debate.<\/p>\n

Maddow kept trying. \u201cOn that specific issue of abortion, though, specifically really with that issue in the states I guess rather than at the federal government because we got the Hyde Amendment at the federal level, do you expect this fight to morph into a, frankly, Democratic Party-based defense of access to abortion?\u201d she asked. \u201cRight now, Democrats are not mounting a very stiff resistance to what Republicans are doing in the state, specifically on access to abortion services.\u201d<\/p>\n

In response, Richards avoided even mentioning the word abortion, let alone defending the practice. \u201cI have actually been encouraged at the federal level to see not only Democratic senators coming to the defense of Planned Parenthood but also Republican senators,\u201d she told Maddow. \u201cSo, I am hoping we\u2019re beginning to see Republicans and Democrats come together in defense of women\u2019s reproductive health care.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pro-abortion position is so weak that Richards can\u2019t even defend abortion when speaking to a sympathetic pro-abortion television host. No wonder she refuses to debate anyone on the pro-life side.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
