{"id":285392,"date":"2023-02-19T11:24:52","date_gmt":"2023-02-19T17:24:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=285392"},"modified":"2023-02-17T19:28:29","modified_gmt":"2023-02-18T01:28:29","slug":"safe-haven-baby-boxes-anonymity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/safe-haven-baby-boxes-anonymity\/","title":{"rendered":"Safe Haven Baby Boxes founder urges lawmakers to remember &#8216;anonymity matters&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe Haven Baby Boxes has been saving the lives of babies who might have otherwise been abandoned or left to die, and the organization&#8217;s founder Monica Kelsey wants people to know the importance of parental anonymity to those safely giving up their infants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe Haven Laws, or \u201cBaby Moses\u201d laws, exist in all 50 states and allow parents to safely surrender an infant in a specific location \u2013 usually at a first responder site \u2013 within a certain number of days after birth. The laws shield parents who, for any number of reasons, cannot care for their infants, and they protect babies born in less than ideal circumstances from dangerous situations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every year, there are dozens of tragic stories of infants born in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/late-term-baby-dead-airplane\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toilets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or deserted in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/infant-recovering-rescue-dumpster-jackson-tennessee\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dumpsters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or simply <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/newborn-baby-rescued-abandoned-maryland\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">left to die in the woods<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide a safe space for infants to be left so first responders can immediately bring them to receive life-saving care.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn some of these states,\u201d Kelsey told Live Action News\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dead-newborn-found-in-indianapolis-woods-could-have-been-saved-by-the-safe-haven-law\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previously<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cthe girl gets free medical care to assist with the birth of the child or any complications resulting from the birth. This law is a win-win situation for all parties involved. The mother walks away with zero chance of prosecution, while the baby has the opportunity to be adopted into a loving home, and a family open their hearts and home to the child for whom they\u2019ve prayed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The key to all of this is <em>parental anonymity<\/em>, and Kelsey is concerned about what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arkleg.state.ar.us\/Bills\/FTPDocument?path=%2FBills%2F2023R%2FPublic%2FSB195.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lawmakers in Arkansas might do<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if this anonymity isn\u2019t carefully guarded.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a series of TikTok videos, she discussed the fundamental need to keep parents anonymous and raised concerns about what some lawmakers are proposing to do. The anonymity protects a mother giving birth, allowing her to be in a safe location when she delivers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf a parent goes into a hospital, gives birth, and surrenders in a hospital \u2013 now, having a baby in a hospital is a safe delivery. We advocate for this. Go into the hospital, give birth, tell them you want to surrender under the Safe Haven law, and then leave without an infant,\u201d she said in her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@safehavenbabyboxes\/video\/7197432929079921962\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TikTok<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But the proposed law would mean that if a mother gives her name in a hospital to receive care during the birth, the Department of Child Services \u201cwill refuse to put this child under the protection of the Safe Haven Law and you will be charged with abandonment. This is going backwards. This is absolutely going backwards.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kelsey is concerned about the health and safety of mothers who feel the need to give up an infant, as much as she is about the surrendered infants themselves. Care and counseling is available through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/shbb.org\/help-for-moms\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Safe Haven Baby Boxes website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Kelsey wants abandoning an infant to be a last resort.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We don\u2019t want women coming to our baby boxes as a first resort, we want it as a last resort,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re going to be placing more babies in our boxes and doing more home births.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@safehavenbabyboxes\/video\/7197539387973012782\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expressed her concern<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this might set a precedent. &#8220;Usually when one state does something, other states follow and we cannot allow a state to dictate a safe haven surrender when a parent is just trying to do the right thing.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Kelsey, this fight is personal, as she herself was a surrendered infant. At 17 years old, her mother was a victim of rape with nowhere to turn, and surrendered her baby at a local hospital.
