Gov. Aruna Miller and leaders of the House and Senate to announce the pro-abortion measures.\u00a0One of the <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/state-watch\/3852635-safe-haven-for-abortion-sought-by-maryland-democrats-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">measures<\/a> included in the legislative package would make abortion a constitutional right. Another would protect abortionists, medical professionals, and patients from any criminal or civil investigations prompted by states with pro-life protections. Other bills would implement privacy protections on the medical records of abortion patients &#8220;to reduce the risk of criminal or civil actions for out-of-state patients,&#8221; according to The Hill, and require all public colleges and universities to develop &#8220;reproductive health access plans&#8221; to ensure students have access to a &#8220;full range&#8221; of &#8220;reproductive health services.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as I am the governor of Maryland, our state will be a safe haven for abortion rights,\u201d Moore <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marylandmatters.org\/2023\/02\/09\/democrats-put-on-a-muscular-show-of-support-for-abortion-rights-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>. \u201cBut the importance of today and the importance of all these leaders is this: We\u2019re going to make sure that Maryland is a safe haven for abortion rights long after I am governor of this state. That\u2019s the importance of today.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today, Maryland took the first step toward enshrining reproductive rights in our state\u2019s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Together, we will make Maryland a safe haven for abortion access. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/s3ESaLd63O\">pic.twitter.com\/s3ESaLd63O<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Governor Wes Moore (@GovWesMoore) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/GovWesMoore\/status\/1623734194504433667?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 9, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Moore is not going to leave this to chance; he will work day and night to protect reproductive rights in Maryland,\u201d Miller said.\u00a0\u201cThese bills will solidify the future of reproductive freedoms in Maryland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.is\/WiDDM#selection-825.36-825.154\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Washington Post<\/a>, the House Republican caucus issued a statement in response to the legislative package.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaryland simply does not need a constitutional amendment enshrining the right to an abortion,\u201d it said. \u201cMoreover, we believe that most Marylanders would prefer a middle course on this issue, and permitting late-term elective abortions \u2014 as this amendment appears to allow \u2014 is outside the mainstream views of our citizens.\u201d The caucus added,\u00a0\u201cWe are certain that becoming the abortion capital of the United States is not something to aspire to or be proud of.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Though he has been in office for less than a month, Moore has already solidified his pro-abortion stance. On his first full day in office, he released <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maryland-governor-releases-funding-train-abortionists\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$3.5 million<\/a> designated by the state to fund the training of new abortionists. This follows a trend established in the state to expand abortion access \u2014 last year lawmakers approved a bill to allow non-physicians to commit abortions. Abortion is currently allowed in Maryland for any reason up to the arbitrary point of &#8220;viability,&#8221; but also allowed past that time for a number of exceptions, including the mother&#8217;s mental health.<\/p>\n<p>The Post reports that in order for the constitutional amendment to pass, it needs a three-fifths majority in both chambers of the General Assembly.
