Doctors in Canada say they are facing subtle pressure from the Canadian government to use Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD) to cut costs for the underfunded national healthcare system.\u00a0MAiD includes both assisted suicide and euthanasia. <\/span><\/p>\n

Critics of MAiD\u00a0claim<\/a>\u00a0that Canada’s government is urging doctors to promote MAiD to their patients for money-saving purposes<\/a>, and some Canadian doctors have now\u00a0organized to resist<\/a>. They argue that the government sees physician-assisted\u00a0suicide<\/a>\u00a0as cheaper for the nation’s publicly funded medical system than providing patients with treatments. <\/span><\/p>\n

In 2020, Canada\u2019s Parliamentary Budget Officer publicly released a report<\/a> that its MAiD program has created a \u201cnet cost reduction\u201d of $86.9 million per year. Not stopping there, it noted that expansion<\/em> of the categories of persons eligible for MAiD would create an additional<\/em> net savings of $62 million per year.<\/span>\u00a0In an article for The Spectator<\/a>, author Yuan Yi Zhu, wrote, “Health care, in particular for those suffering from chronic conditions, is expensive; but assisted suicide only costs the taxpayer $2,327 per \u2018case.\u2019 And, of course, those who have to rely wholly on government-provided Medicare pose a far greater burden on the exchequer than those who have savings or private insurance\u2026. There is already\u00a0talk<\/a>\u00a0of allowing \u2018mature minors\u2019 access to euthanasia too\u2014just think of the lifetime savings.\u201d<\/p>\n

A group of 1,502 Canadian\u00a0doctors<\/a>\u00a0have formed\u00a0Physicians Together with Vulnerable Canadians<\/a>\u00a0(PTVC) and have publicly expressed their concerns about the situation on the group’s\u00a0website<\/a>:<\/p>\n

Medicine\u2026 has been transformed into a technical occupation that allows physicians to deliberately end the lives of their suffering patients. Forced participation in arranging and facilitating euthanasia and assisted suicide is now required by certain regulatory colleges\u2026patients can no longer unconditionally trust their medical professional to advocate for their life when they are at their weakest and most vulnerable. Suddenly, a lethal injection becomes part of a repertoire of interventions offered to end their pain and suffering.<\/em><\/p>\n

PTVC’s online statement demands that the expansion of MAiD be curtailed because it is eroding fundamental patient and doctor relationships and protections. Dr. Ramona Coelho, a family physician and founding member of PTVC,\u00a0told<\/a> the Ottawa Citizen, “<\/span>Our profession has been coerced into facilitating suicide rather than preventing it, for ever-increasing numbers of citizens. We watch in utter dismay and horror at how the nature of our medical profession has been so quickly destroyed by the creation of misguided laws.\u201d<\/p>\n

In addition, Canada\u2019s newest anti-euthanasia and assisted suicide organization \u201c<\/span>MAiD to MAD<\/span><\/a>: Physicians Together with Vulnerable Canadians\u201d has over 1500 signatures from Canadian doctors for its plaintive and eloquent online petition against Canada\u2019s <\/span>\u201c<\/span>misguided<\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/span> MAiD regime.\u00a0<\/span>In particular, Dr. Coelho, also a founding member of MAID to MAD, criticized the expansion of MAiD to adolescents.\u00a0 She noted<\/a><\/span>, \u201cThere is evidence that <\/span>messages<\/span><\/a> that promote suicide<\/span>, and knowing someone who <\/span>has engaged<\/span><\/a> in self-harm or suicide<\/span>, both raise the risk of teenage suicide contagion.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In 2016, Canada\u2019s legislature, in response to a Supreme Court of Canada decision, determined that MAiD would be permitted for \u201ccompetent adults\u201d with \u201cgrievous and irremediable\u201d medical conditions. Since then, illnesses no longer must be terminal, a 10-day waiting period has been abrogated, and suicide for mental health reasons and \u201cmature adolescents\u201d are also ready to be welcomed.<\/span>\u00a0There have been reports<\/a> of MAID requests for lack of <\/span>adequate housing<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>in lieu of providing handicap-accessible <\/span>accommodations<\/span><\/a>, and <\/span>more<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
