{"id":284897,"date":"2023-02-08T12:50:05","date_gmt":"2023-02-08T18:50:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=284897"},"modified":"2023-02-07T11:07:45","modified_gmt":"2023-02-07T17:07:45","slug":"minnesota-bishop-barron-abortion-barbarism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/minnesota-bishop-barron-abortion-barbarism\/","title":{"rendered":"Bishop Robert Barron: Minnesota&#8217;s extreme pro-abortion law \u2018worst kind of barbarism\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Robert Barron, the Bishop of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, spoke out against the state\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/minnesota-legalizes-abortion-birth-extreme-nation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new abortion law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week following the law\u2019s signature by Governor Tim Walz.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.revisor.mn.gov\/bills\/text.php?number=HF1&amp;type=bill&amp;version=0&amp;session=ls93&amp;session_year=2023&amp;session_number=0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new law<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has been dubbed the \u201cmost extreme\u201d in the nation, enshrines the constitutional right to taxpayer-funded abortion up to birth. It offers <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">no<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pro-life protections, and also removes parental notification requirements for minors, thereby allowing a child to get an abortion without limits, and without her parents\u2019 consent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In a February 1 video posted to social media, Bishop Barron called the law &#8220;morally outrageous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FBishopRobertBarron%2Fvideos%2F1120394511973022%2F&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"591\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want to share with you my anger, my frustration over this terrible law that was just signed by the governor in Minnesota \u2014 the most really extreme abortion law that\u2019s on the books in the wake of the <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> reversal,\u201d Barron said in the video, noting that a 12-year-old could now get an abortion without her parents&#8217; knowledge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut the worst thing,\u201d he added, \u201cis it basically permits abortion all the way through pregnancy up to the very end. And indeed, indeed if a child somehow survives a botched abortion, the law now prohibits an attempt to save that child\u2019s life. I\u00a0don\u2019t know why this is really debated anymore in our country, but this strikes me as just the worst kind of barbarism. And in the name of, I don\u2019t know, subjectivity, and freedom, and choice and all this, we\u2019re accepting this kind of brutality.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/aBIhez7C1dM\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bishop Barron went on to describe the double standard established by the law.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat strikes me is this: If a child is born and now a day old, or two days old and resting peacefully in his bassinet and someone broke into the house and with a knife killed the child and dismembered him, well, the whole country would rise up in righteous indignation,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBut yet, that same thing can happen with complete impunity as the child is in his mother\u2019s womb about to be born. Again, I just think this is so beyond the pale and that we\u2019ve so lost our way on this issue,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-283198 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota\u2019s other bishops also spoke out against the law prior to its passage. In a January 18 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mncatholic.org\/bishops_letter_to_legislators_on_hf1_sf1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">letter<\/a>\u00a0to legislators they said, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As inconvenient as it is for some, we cannot ignore the reality of the unborn child in the womb\u2014a living human being who is owed the protection of the community.
