Vermont lawmakers in both the House and the Senate have introduced<\/a> new bills that would protect and expand abortion even further in the already pro-abortion state.<\/p>\n

S 37<\/a> in the Senate and H 89<\/a> in the House are both new bills that favor abortion. Both bills<\/a> would “shield” abortion businesses and their workers from investigations and disciplinary actions related to abortions committed on out-of-state residents. The Senate bill would also outlaw insurance companies from raising rates on abortion businesses, and it would attempt to restrict the free speech of pregnancy resource centers (PRCs).<\/p>\n

Lucy Leriche, vice president of public policy for Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, praised the bills. \u201cI think the idea is that, after the overturn of Roe (v. Wade) this summer, I think legislators just wanted to be really efficient in capturing all of the ways that they can think of to protect reproductive health care and to put them in one place so that it can be very clear to people,\u201d she\u00a0told VTDigger<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Leriche also was fully supportive of the bill that attempts to stifle the valuable services provided by PRCs.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe call them fake clinics because that\u2019s what they are, and they are halfway through their appointment before they go \u2018oh, this isn\u2019t what i thought at all,\u2019” she said.<\/p>\n

Mary Beerworth, executive director of Vermont Right to Life, was quick to defend the work of PRCs. \u201cThese people are operating with the financial support of people who support what they’re doing. So why it’s any business of this Statehouse, I have no idea,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re not deceiving women. They’re very clear. How do you trick a woman into carrying a baby to term? That’s what they say: \u2018They’re tricking them into it.\u2019 How is that? You’re just saying, \u2018Let’s do an ultrasound.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cYou would not believe how many stories I hear,\u201d she added. \u201cThey see that ultrasound \u2014\u00a0they see that little heartbeat, and they go, \u2018This is my baby and I’m keeping it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

The new legislation is only the latest attempt by Vermont legislators to affirm the state’s support for abortion. In December, Governor Phil Scott\u00a0signed<\/a> a constitutional amendment enshrining abortion as a right, and in 2019, lawmakers passed a law<\/a> guaranteeing abortion remains legal for all nine months of pregnancy.<\/p>\n
