{"id":284705,"date":"2023-02-03T20:35:26","date_gmt":"2023-02-04T02:35:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=284705"},"modified":"2023-02-03T17:05:27","modified_gmt":"2023-02-03T23:05:27","slug":"abortion-protest-barretts-home","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/abortion-protest-barretts-home\/","title":{"rendered":"Abortion activists protest outside Amy Coney Barrett&#8217;s home"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>(<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/29\/radical-activists-illegally-protest-outside-amy-coney-barretts-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Daily Signal<\/a>) Far-left activists sang, cursed, and shouted as they protested numerous political causes outside the home of Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/25\/hogans-office-surprised-disappointed-by-lack-of-doj-urgency-in-protecting-justices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Barrett<\/a>\u00a0[on January 29].<\/p>\n<p>Activists with Our Rights DC marched into the Barrett family\u2019s quiet Virginia neighborhood on Sunday evening, despite a federal law (18 U.S. Code 1507) that forbids picketing or parading \u201cin or near a building or residence occupied or used by such judge, juror, witness, or court officer\u201d with the intent of intimidating or influencing that person.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCut her time short,\u201d they chanted as they processed. First they shouted (presumably to Barrett) about the death of Tyre Nichols and racial justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSay his name!\u201d they chanted.<\/p>\n<p>Then they quickly moved on to abortion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy body my choice, my body belongs to me,\u201d they sang into megaphones, as one of the activists beat a drum.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"video-container\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Far-left protestors are back at Amy Coney Barrett\u2019s home demonstrating in violation of 18 U.S. code 1507 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5r0D2cpryd\">pic.twitter.com\/5r0D2cpryd<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Mary Margaret Olohan (@MaryMargOlohan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MaryMargOlohan\/status\/1619818582623526912?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 29, 2023<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<p>The Daily Signal repeatedly asked the activists, without response, why they were protesting in the Barrett\u2019s neighborhood. The activists similarly would not address questions about the protest\u2019s effect on Barrett\u2019s seven children (there are many other children who reside in the neighborhood as well).<\/p>\n<p>The activists have been protesting outside the homes of the justices for almost nine months, since the May leak of the draft opinion indicating Roe v. Wade would be overturned. Frequent protesters include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/heres-a-look-at-some-of-the-activists-who-protest-outside-the-supreme-court-justices-homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sadie Kuhns<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/11\/07\/tom-cotton-slams-merrick-garland-allowing-illegal-protests-supreme-court-justices-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Melissa Barlow<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2022\/11\/04\/protester-arrested-for-disrupting-supreme-court-oral-arguments-leads-group-protesting-at-justices-homes-for-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nikki Enfield<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/heres-a-look-at-some-of-the-activists-who-protest-outside-the-supreme-court-justices-homes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nadine Seiler<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these protesters have ties to ShutDownDC and Ruth Sent Us, organizations that have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/twitter-suspends-group-that-published-supreme-court-justice-addresses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">posted the addresses<\/a> of the Supreme Court justices online, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/shutdowndc-group-offers-bounties-twitter-public-sightings-conservative-supreme-court-justices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">offered bounties<\/a> for sightings of the justices, and called for continued protesting intended to make the justices uncomfortable with overturning Roe v. Wade.<\/p>\n<p>Only last weekend, The Daily Signal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/22\/far-left-activists-continue-demonstrations-at-justice-kavanaugh-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">covered a protest<\/a> at Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh\u2019s home in Chevy Chase, Maryland. As has been the case in recent months, Kavanaugh\u2019s home was heavily guarded by U.S. Marshals standing between the protesters, who were on the sidewalk, and the house.<\/p>\n<p>Conversely, Barrett\u2019s home did not have U.S. Marshals stationed in front of the house (perhaps because the demonstrations at Barrett\u2019s home are typically smaller than that at Kavanaugh\u2019s). The Daily Signal observed two or three policemen as well as two U.S. Marshals on Sunday. The authorities did not stand in front of the house but largely stood by their vehicles.<\/p>\n<p>After processing around the neighborhood several times, the protesters marched back to their meeting place, a middle school parking lot.<\/p>\n<p>Both Republican Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin and former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan begged the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailysignal.com\/2023\/01\/24\/biden-doj-behind-failure-to-arrest-activists-illegally-protesting-at-justices-homes-experts-say\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Department of Justice<\/a> in May to enforce the federal law protecting Supreme Court justices.<\/p>\n<p>The DOJ did not fully respond to the request until June 8\u2014the same day that authorities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dailywire.com\/news\/police-id-armed-man-who-said-he-wanted-to-kill-supreme-court-justice-kavanaugh-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested Nicholas Roske<\/a> and charged him with attempting to kill Justice Brett Kavanaugh\u2014but refused to discuss whether the protesters had broken the law citing \u201clongstanding policy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe thought there would be more urgency,\u201d Michael Ricci, who served as former Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan\u2019s spokesman, shared with The Daily Signal in a Wednesday phone interview. \u201cIn this climate, there are any number of threats, both specific and vague, against public officials. And we thought there would be more urgency about protecting the perimeter of the justices\u2019 homes, and by extension, their neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Laws in both <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShannonBream\/status\/1543252591756328960?s=20&amp;t=POvvAWpvqLER0zY6MNTvwQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maryland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ShannonBream\/status\/1543336871241072643?s=20&amp;t=POvvAWpvqLER0zY6MNTvwQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Virginia<\/a> also prohibit picketing to disrupt or threaten to disrupt that individual\u2019s \u201ctranquility in his home.\u201d The Maryland Attorney General\u2019s Office <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/riccimike\/status\/1543313595563495424\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has reportedly disputed<\/a> the constitutionality of the state\u2019s law.<\/p>\n<p>And in Virginia, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Jeffrey McKay <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JeffreyCMcKay\/status\/1524519133303513088?s=20&amp;t=nNFh57XpAJCkz5jA284Hww\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">denied<\/a> Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin\u2019s request to establish an expanded security perimeter around the homes of three Supreme Court justices who live in Fairfax County.<\/p>\n<p>Hogan\u2019s office began coordination calls with law enforcement after the governors sent their letter to the DOJ, according to Ricci. That coordination included state law enforcement, Montgomery County law enforcement, and then Supreme Court law enforcement.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo the extent that federal law enforcement was involved, they were more focused on getting the justices to and from their homes, and weren\u2019t as focused on the immediate community,\u201d he explained. \u201cSo it was clear to us we were not going to get a lot of backup, in terms of protecting the area and keeping the peace on the streets, so to speak. So that really became a state, county operation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On July 2, the Supreme Court\u2019s chief security officer, Gail Curley, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/dc-md-va\/2022\/07\/02\/supreme-court-justices-picketing-homes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">asked<\/a> top Maryland and Virginia officials to enforce their laws protecting the justices.
