{"id":284478,"date":"2023-01-30T06:34:47","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T12:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=284478"},"modified":"2023-01-29T14:04:06","modified_gmt":"2023-01-29T20:04:06","slug":"virginia-lawmakers-refuse-protections-preborn-humans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/virginia-lawmakers-refuse-protections-preborn-humans\/","title":{"rendered":"Virginia lawmakers refuse to pass protections for preborn human beings"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Pro-abortion Virginia Senators defeated three pro-life bills on Thursday, each of which would have offered preborn protections at different stages of pregnancy.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?231+sum+SB1284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 1284<\/a> would have protected nearly all preborn children from abortion, with exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. <a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?231+sum+SB1385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 1385<\/a> would have protected preborn children from abortion after 15 weeks gestation, and <a href=\"https:\/\/lis.virginia.gov\/cgi-bin\/legp604.exe?231+sum+SB1483\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senate Bill 1483<\/a> would have protected children after the time of &#8220;viability&#8221; \u2014 a loose term for that period of time when it is believed that a child can survive outside the womb. All three failed to advance in the Democratic-controlled Senate.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the Senate majority&#8217;s refusal to pass the bills protecting human beings prior to birth, recent polling shows that this is not in step with what most Americans want. A <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/marist-poll-80-percent-oppose-unrestricted-abortion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2023 Knights of Columbus-Marist poll<\/a> revealed that nearly 70% of Americans oppose unrestricted abortion and would limit it to the first trimester or only to extremely rare cases. Forty-four percent of those polled believe abortion should be outlawed in nearly <em>all<\/em> cases, except for the extremely rare circumstances of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SB 1284 was sponsored by Sen. Travis Hackworth, who had promised after the overturn of <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em> to sponsor such a bill. &#8220;No society can be deemed civil when it murders and discards its babies because they are deemed inconvenient,&#8221; he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travishackworth.com\/updates\/protecting-virginia-children-act-announcement\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> at the time. &#8220;I am proud to lead the efforts in the Virginia Senate to patron this important legislation that will protect life and ensure Virginia leads the way in providing a dignified and respected future for all Virginians &#8211; from conception to old age.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>SP 1385, the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/virginia-lawmakers-bill-preborn-15-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">15-week protection bill<\/a> had been a special priority for Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, who had given his support to the 15-week time period based on the assumption that preborn children can feel pain at that time. However, research has shown that preborn children can feel pain <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/preborn-babies-heightened-pain-8-weeks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">much earlier<\/a>. But regardless of whether or not they can feel pain, each child is a unique and distinct person worthy of life from the moment of conception. The ability to feel pain does not determine one&#8217;s membership in the human species.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/S-lQOooYAs8\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>Youngkin expressed his disappointment at the bill&#8217;s failure.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver 80% of Virginians have expressed a view that Republicans and Democrats should find consensus on this issue,\u201d Youngkin told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dcnewsnow.com\/news\/local-news\/virginia\/exclusive-va-gov-youngkin-decries-state-senate-dems-rejecting-15-week-abortion-ban\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">DC News Now<\/a>. \u201cAnd consensus on this issue is when a child can feel pain at 15 weeks and to protect life then. I believe they\u2019re way out of touch and there\u2019s still a path forward in the House. I sure hope they start listening to the folks that elected them to come represent them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sen. Siobhan Dunnavant, an OB-GYN, had sponsored SB 1483, limiting third-trimester abortions\u00a0so that they would only be allowed when the mother&#8217;s life is at risk (though an induced abortion is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5TmomK2RB2A&amp;t=1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not medically necessary<\/a>).\u00a0\u201cWhen a child can live outside of the womb, there\u2019s absolutely no reason to abort that child in order to protect the mother,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/virginia-democrats-defeat-bills-limiting-abortion-access\/3264191\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> Dunnavant.<\/p>\n<p>The profitable abortion industry in the state celebrated its victory. \u201cAll three of the dangerous anti-abortion proposals before this committee represented grave threats to Virginians\u2019 health and rights, and we are thrilled to now celebrate their defeat,\u201d Jamie Lockhart, the executive director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Virginia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcwashington.com\/news\/local\/virginia-democrats-defeat-bills-limiting-abortion-access\/3264191\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Though there are several similar bills currently in debate at the Republican-controlled House, the Senate&#8217;s refusal of all three bills signals its current unwillingness to pass any pro-life protections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><i>Did you know that as little as $10 a month is enough to reach more than 3,000 moms and dads with the truth about abortion this year?
