Just a few decades ago, doctors who intentionally killed their patients would earn a nickname like &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Kevorkian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Dr. Death<\/a>.&#8221; Today, physician-assisted death \u2014 by assisted suicide or euthanasia \u2014 has become increasingly accepted as a compassionate and dignified way to die.<\/p>\n<p>Laws surrounding physician-assisted death differ in requirements and limitations. There are also differences in terminology used in these laws. Assisted suicide means the doctor prescribes a deadly cocktail of drugs, which the patient takes on their own. Euthanasia means the doctor administers the deadly cocktail that kills the patient. And\u00a0<em>passive<\/em> euthanasia means the doctor cannot actively participate in killing a patient but is allowed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thewire.in\/health\/passive-euthanasia-now-a-legal-reality-in-india\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>withdraw<\/em> treatment<\/a>, such as a ventilator or feeding tube.<\/p>\n<h3>Asia<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>India:<\/strong> Assisted suicide is not legal in India, but <em>passive<\/em> euthanasia is.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Japan:<\/strong> There are currently no specific laws banning assisted suicide or euthanasia in Japan. However, the situation is largely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.waseda.jp\/folaw\/icl\/assets\/uploads\/2014\/05\/A02859211-00-000270001.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">unclear<\/a>, and left up to interpretations of homicide and manslaughter laws. Because the law is not clear on the issue, some doctors who have committed euthanasia have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nippon.com\/en\/in-depth\/d00644\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">arrested<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Central and South America<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Argentina:<\/strong> Euthanasia and assisted suicide are illegal; however, it has been <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/10413902\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">claimed<\/a> that they are widely practiced regardless of legality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chile:<\/strong> Passive euthanasia is legal in Chile. A new constitution allowing assisted suicide was passed by President Gabriel Boric last year, but it was <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/voters-chile-reject-constitution-abortion-euthanasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">defeated by voters<\/a> in a landslide.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colombia:<\/strong> Colombia became the first Latin American country to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/colombia-court-approves-medically-assisted-suicide-2022-05-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legalize assisted suicide<\/a> in 2022. Before that, it had been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-suicide-fails-colombia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decriminalized<\/a> and largely unregulated.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mexico:<\/strong> Passive euthanasia is legal in certain areas of Mexico: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eluniversal.com.mx\/notas\/472474.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico City<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lja.mx\/2009\/04\/solo-falta-reglamentar-la-voluntad-anticipada-para-aplicarla-ruvalcaba\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aguascalientes<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/eleconomista.com.mx\/notas-online\/politica\/2009\/09\/01\/michoacan-aprueba-ley-voluntad-anticipada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michoac\u00e1n<\/a>. Active euthanasia and assisted suicide remain illegal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Peru:<\/strong> Though assisted suicide and euthanasia are illegal in Peru, one woman was able to be euthanized after <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/peru-euthanasia-woman-illness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petitioning<\/a> the Peruvian Supreme Court.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Uruguay:<\/strong> Passive euthanasia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/uk-uruguay-euthanasia\/uruguay-approves-right-to-die-for-terminally-ill-idUKTRE52H0FA20090318\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal<\/a>, though assisted suicide and euthanasia are not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-283198 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: left;\">Europe<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Austria:<\/strong> Assisted suicide was legalized in Austria in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/austria-country-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>. The law took effect in 2022, though euthanasia remains illegal.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Belgium:<\/strong> One of the first countries to legalize assisted suicide, Belgium has become a model of how such laws can so easily be manipulated. In the 20 years since its legalization, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/belgium-died-euthanasia-27000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over 27,000 people<\/a> have died (that authorities know of). <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/children-killed-belgium-euthanasia-legal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Children<\/a> are eligible for euthanasia, as well as people with <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/belgium-euthanasia-deaths-rise-mentally-ill\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mental illness<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/belgian-twins-euthanized-over-fear-of-going-blind\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disabilities<\/a>. Their program is so extreme that it has even been <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/un-criticizes-belgium-euthanasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">criticized<\/a> by the United Nations Human Rights Council.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Denmark:<\/strong> While assisted suicide and active euthanasia are illegal, passive euthanasia is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/next\/2022\/12\/10\/where-in-europe-is-assisted-dying-legal-\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">allowed<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Finland:<\/strong> Passive euthanasia is <a href=\"https:\/\/evl.fi\/current-issues\/euthanasia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legal<\/a>, while assisted suicide and euthanasia are not, though attempts have been made to legalize them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>France:<\/strong> Assisted suicide and euthanasia are <em>not<\/em> legal in France; however, French President Emmanuel Macron has <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/france-citizens-convention-legalization-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shown support<\/a> for them, and a \u201ccitizens\u2019 convention\u201d in December of this year will debate whether or not assisted suicide should be legalized.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Germany:<\/strong> The top court in Germany <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-europe-51643306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overturned<\/a> a ban on assisted suicide in 2020, with doctors removing a ban on assisted suicide from their code of conduct in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/doctors-germany-end-ban-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>. German politicians have since been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-germany-politics-euthanasia\/german-lawmakers-propose-new-law-on-assisted-suicide-idUSKBN29Y1KS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">working<\/a> to outright legalize it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Italy:<\/strong> While assisted suicide is <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/italy-assisted-suicide-blocked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technically illegal<\/a>, Italy&#8217;s Constitutional Court decriminalized assisted suicide under certain conditions (including the approval of local health authorities and an ethics board) in 2021. Last year, a 44-year-old man who became paralyzed after a car crash became the country&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/paralyzed-man-dies-italy-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first assisted suicide<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Luxembourg:<\/strong> Assisted suicide and euthanasia are both legal in Luxembourg. They were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wfrtds.org\/worldmap\/luxembourg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legalized<\/a> in 2009.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Netherlands:<\/strong>\u00a0Like Belgium, the Netherlands became one of the first countries to legalize assisted suicide and euthanasia in 2002. In 2020, nearly <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/devastating-netherlands-euthanized-people-ever-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">7,000 people<\/a> were killed by these methods; over 200 of them were considered to have mental disabilities. It was discovered in 2019 that <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/quarter-deaths-netherlands-euthanasia-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a quarter of all deaths<\/a> in the Netherlands are induced, and reasons for euthanasia there have included <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/netherlands-mentally-ill-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">depression<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/euthanasia-spirals-out-of-control-netherlands-now-allows-euthanasia-alcoholics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addiction<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/people-are-being-euthanized-in-europe-for-autism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autism<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/a-victim-of-sexual-abuse-was-just-euthanized-in-the-netherlands\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sexual abuse<\/a>. Doctors who <em>forcibly<\/em> euthanized a woman as she fought for her life were\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/courtroom-applauds-dutch-doctor-forcibly-killed-acquitted\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">acquitted<\/a> of all charges.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Portugal:<\/strong> Though currently illegal, the Portuguese Parliament has repeatedly tried to legalize assisted suicide. The first two attempts were rejected by either the president or the Constitutional Court. A third bill was passed in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/portugal-parliament-assisted-suicide-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">December of 2022<\/a>, and President Marcel Rebelo de Sousa sent it to the Constitutional Court for review.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Spain:<\/strong> Assisted suicide was legalized in Spain in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/spain-assisted-suicide-bishops-protecting-life\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2021<\/a>, and people with a &#8220;chronic and incurable&#8221; illness qualify \u2014 meaning people with disabilities or chronic but not deadly illnesses. If a patient is considered to be incapacitated, a family member or doctor can sign off on the request for them \u2014 a situation many have criticized as being rife with potential for abuse.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sweden:<\/strong> Passive euthanasia was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barrons.com\/news\/euthanasia-where-it-s-legal-in-europe-01611917105\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legalized<\/a> in 2010.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Switzerland:<\/strong> Assisted suicide is legal in Switzerland, though euthanasia is not. However, there are very few limits on assisted suicide there, which has led to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-suicide-switzerland-rules-tourism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">suicide tourism<\/a>, allowing anyone \u2014 from <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/healthy-sisters-secret-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">healthy foreigners<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/switzerland-soon-euthanizing-prisoners\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">imprisoned people<\/a> \u2014 to undergo assisted suicide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>North America<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Canada:<\/strong> Canada legalized assisted suicide in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.her.ie\/news\/canada-legalises-euthanasia-for-the-terminally-ill\/298541\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2016<\/a>, but the nation has since become a cautionary tale. Medical Aid in Dying (MAiD) deaths have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncregister.com\/cna\/deaths-by-euthanasia-soared-last-year-in-canada\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">skyrocketed<\/a>, as people report being <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/investigation-canadian-patients-urged-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pressured<\/a> into dying, even though they were only seeking <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canadian-soldier-euthanasia-ptsd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">medical treatment<\/a>. Others have been approved for MAiD simply due to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/woman-chemical-sensitivities-die-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poverty<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canadian-veteran-offered-euthanasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">disabilities<\/a>. Canada plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canada-assisted-suicide-mental-illness-delay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expand<\/a> euthanasia to allow it for people with mental illness, and is the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/canada-leads-world-organ-donation-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">world leader<\/a> in organ donation following assisted suicide. There is even a movement for <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/quebec-physicians-call-infant-euthanasia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">infants<\/a> with &#8220;grave malformations&#8221; to be eligible for euthanasia.<\/li>\n<li><strong>United States:<\/strong> Assisted suicide is legal in 10 states, as well as the District of Columbia. It has been legalized in <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/california-doctors-suicide-conscience\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">California<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/colorado-hospitals-refuse-to-participate-in-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Colorado<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/dc-assisted-suicide-law-goes-into-effect-despite-efforts-to-stop-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">District of Columbia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/hawaii-loosen-assisted-suicide-restrictions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Hawaii<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/maine-legalizes-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Maine<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/montana-bill-state-constitution-personhood-fertilization-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Montana<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-jersey-legalized-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Jersey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-mexico-governor-legalizing-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New Mexico<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/oregon-allow-death-tourism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oregon<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Oceania<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Australia:<\/strong> Assisted suicide in Australia is not considered a federal issue; instead, individual states can make their own laws. It has been legalized in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/assisted-suicide-australian-victoria-historic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Victoria<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/western-australia-legalize-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Western Australia<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/exit-international-assisted-suicide-depressed-healthy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tasmania<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/queensland-australia-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Queensland<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/indaily.com.au\/news\/2022\/08\/12\/sa-euthanasia-laws-effective-from-january\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Australia<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-south-wales-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New South Wales<\/a>, with only the Northern Territory as an outlier. The legislation in South Australia was passed in 2021, and will take effect on January 31, 2023; New South Wales&#8217; legislation was passed in 2022, and will take effect on November 28, 2023.<\/li>\n<li><strong>New Zealand:<\/strong>\u00a0Assisted suicide was legalized in November of 2021, and New Zealand recorded\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-zealand-143-deaths-year-assisted-suicide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">143 assisted suicide deaths<\/a> by July 2022.
