Gessing and Care Net are represented by the Liberty Justice Center, a nonprofit, public-interest litigation center that fights for taxpayers and accountable government.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cNew Mexico\u2019s constitution prevents politicians from using taxpayer funds like their own personal piggy banks,\u201d says Daniel Suhr, managing attorney at the Liberty Justice Center. \u201cAlbuquerque\u2019s grant to Planned Parenthood is pure politics, and the state constitution prevents that kind of abuse of taxpayer dollars.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cTaxpayers should not be compelled to subsidize Planned Parenthood or any other private group,\u201d said Gessing, who is president of the free-market Rio Grande Foundation. \u201cThe anti-donation clause of New Mexico\u2019s constitution is a bulwark for taxpayers against politically motivated earmarks just like this one.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u201cCare Net provides essential services to pregnant women and newborn moms, but we were never given a fair shot at these funds,\u201d said Paula Gonzales, executive director of Care Net. \u201cThe government cannot give money without disclosure, discussion, and agreement by the taxpayers. The NM Constitution is very clear in this area. That is why this lawsuit is important to us as it puts the government leaders on notice to the state\u2019s established law.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:276}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The Liberty Justice Center filed its lawsuit, <a href=\"https:\/\/libertyjusticecenter.org\/cases\/gessing-v-yara\/\">Gessing v. Yara<\/a>, against Stephanie Yara, Director of Finance and Administration for the City of Albuquerque, Carol M.
