{"id":283693,"date":"2023-01-25T14:43:14","date_gmt":"2023-01-25T20:43:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=283693"},"modified":"2023-01-24T16:31:36","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T22:31:36","slug":"micro-preemie-born-23-weeks-first-birthday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/micro-preemie-born-23-weeks-first-birthday\/","title":{"rendered":"Micro-preemie born at 23 weeks celebrates his first birthday"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>A micro-preemie who was born at just 23 weeks is celebrating a big milestone with his family \u2014 his first birthday.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0Amandi Omokore-Allen was born in Austin, Texas, on January 10, 2022, he faced just a 10% chance of survival.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was under a pound-and-a-half and 23 weeks and two days,&#8221; Samantha Smith, a neonatal nurse practitioner at Pediatrix Neonatology of Texas and Ascension Seton Medical Center\u00a0in Austin,\u00a0told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/lifestyle\/micro-preemie-born-edge-viability-texas-celebrates-1st-birthday-survivor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Fox News Digital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Amandi&#8217;s parents, Tolulope Omokore and Patrick Allen, had already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/now\/micro-preemie-born-edge-viability-070055965.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">undergone<\/a> quite an ordeal. Pregnant with twins, Tolulope started experiencing spotting when she was 22.5 weeks pregnant, and soon learned that Amandi&#8217;s brother had passed away. Doctors put Tolulope on bedrest immediately in the hopes of prolonging the life of the other twin in utero for as long as possible.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FPediatrixMed%2Fposts%2Fpfbid023xyw5Ee5ahJggpGXERVfzQ39nHyfveZaDEikuwKfok6kw7gkCv3X96B8EDmnJqh5l&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=500\" width=\"500\" height=\"607\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe>\n<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There were a lot of emotions,&#8221; Tolulope said. &#8220;The doctors told us, \u2018Hey, you\u2019re going to be here until you give birth\u2019 \u2014 which we hoped would be May. In my mind, I\u2019m talking to Amandi, saying, \u2018Please just stay in there.\u2019&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Despite all the medical efforts, little Amandi was born just a week later, weighing one pound five ounces.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After Amandi was born, Tolulope was able to deliver the body of her other child,\u00a0Asaiah.\u00a0&#8220;It was a very bittersweet moment,&#8221; she said.\u00a0&#8220;I was able to hold Asaiah, but they took Amandi straight from me\u00a0to the incubator\u00a0because, of course, every second counts. And I\u2019m thinking, I\u2019ve just lost one \u2014 am I going to lose both of them?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In an August <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.pediatrix.com\/when-tragedies-and-miracles-collide-a-young-couples-nicu-journey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>, Pediatrix Medical Group detailed Amandi&#8217;s uphill battle. \u201cAmandi was quite ill in the beginning,\u201d the hospital said. \u201cInitially, he was on a ventilator, and he had pneumothorax, requiring a chest tube. He also had some feeding intolerance in need of continuous gavage feeds, he developed pneumonia about six weeks in and he had a pulmonary hemorrhage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/walgreens-cvs-petition\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-283198\" src=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg\" alt=\"Walgreens CVS banner\" width=\"700\" height=\"180\" srcset=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--700x180.jpg 700w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--300x77.jpg 300w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--768x197.jpg 768w, https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Keep-Abortion-Pill-Out-Of-Walgreens-CVSLAN-Horizontal--500x128.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Despite his rough beginning, Amandi pulled through. After 155 days in the NICU, he was able to go home with his family in June. &#8220;Everyone was\u00a0clapping and crying,&#8221;\u00a0 Tolulope said. &#8220;I was hugging everyone.
