{"id":283690,"date":"2023-01-19T12:40:23","date_gmt":"2023-01-19T18:40:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.liveaction.org\/news\/?p=283690"},"modified":"2023-01-19T13:08:49","modified_gmt":"2023-01-19T19:08:49","slug":"new-york-city-health-clinics-abortion-pill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/new-york-city-health-clinics-abortion-pill\/","title":{"rendered":"New York City requires health clinics to dispense abortion pill&#8230; for &#8216;free&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>New York City is taking another step towards the goal of becoming a haven for abortion by requiring community health clinics to dispense the abortion pill \u2014 at no cost to clients.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/01\/15\/adams-inks-deal-to-offer-abortion-pills-at-nyc-clinics-sparking-tourism-fears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York Post<\/a>, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will be purchasing mifepristone from Nixon-Shane LLC\/R&amp;S Northeast LLC., with the deal secured through a sole source contract.<\/p>\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/dcas\/downloads\/pdf\/cityrecord\/cityrecord-01-13-23.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public notice<\/a>, this plan was created \u201cto mitigate the threat to public health posed by the recent Supreme Court decision that overturned Roe vs Wade, which provided a constitutional right to abortion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Health Department further released a statement defending the move, which is already garnering criticism.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gnEHZiud8dg\" width=\"640\" height=\"355\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMayor Adams and the Health Department have made no secret of their commitment to reproductive rights,\u201d the statement read. \u201cWith New York state\u2019s abortion protections codified, our city launched into action in support of residents from other states whose freedom of choice was once again restricted after the Dobbs v. Jackson Women\u2019s Health Organization ruling and doubled down on support for New Yorkers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year, Mayor Eric Adams signed legislation requiring city-run health clinics to make abortion available to women at no cost, and this law will take effect later this year. It in unclear if the contract regarding abortion pills is related. Adams also arranged for an <a href=\"https:\/\/archive.liveaction.org\/news\/nyc-abortion-access-phone-line\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">abortion access phone line<\/a> to be set up so women can obtain abortions more easily.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAbortion is the killing of an innocent human life,\u201d Dennis Poust, executive director of the New York State Catholic Conference, told the New York Post. \u201cAbortion, unfortunately, is New York\u2019s answer to everything concerning pregnancy. Abortion is promoted as a social good.
