Tuesday morning, the 87-year-old woman collapsed in the dining room of a retirement home.\u00a0 At the time, Bayless was barely breathing.\u00a0 A nurse called 911, but refused to give any potential life saving aid, despite pleas from the dispatcher.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We need to get CPR started, that&#8217;s not enough, okay?&#8221; said dispatcher Tracey Halvorson on a 911 tape released by the Bakersfield Fire Department.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Yeah we can&#8217;t do CPR,&#8221; said the nurse, who cited company policy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As a human being I don&#8217;t, you know, is there anybody there that&#8217;s willing to help this lady and not let her die?&#8221; asked Halvorson.<\/p>\n<p>After a short pause the nurse said, &#8220;Um&#8230; not at this time.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Halvorson becomes more frantic throughout the duration of the call for someone to perform CPR.\u00a0 After several refusals from the nurse, the dispatcher starts pleading for her to find someone not employed by the home to get on the phone, take instructions and help the woman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Can we flag someone down in the street and get them to help this lady?&#8221; Halvorson says on the call. &#8220;Can we flag a stranger down? I bet a stranger would help her.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It looks bad enough in print, but only <a href=\"http:\/\/www.kspr.com\/videogallery\/74668972\/News\/VIDEO-Frantic-911-operater-pleads-with-nurse-to-perform-CPR\">the audio<\/a> captures the full extent of the horror, contrasting the dispatcher\u2019s frantic disbelief with the nurse\u2019s lifeless, seeming indifference to the fact that a woman was dying in front of her. One can\u2019t help but wonder why she even bothered to call.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.aarp.org\/2013\/03\/04\/sally-abrahms-nurse-who-refused-to-perform-cpr-on-independent-living-resident\/\">According to AARP<\/a>, Glenwood Gardens isn\u2019t licensed as a continued care retirement community and therefore isn\u2019t subject to CCRC regulations or contracts that would mandate they provide skilled aid or medical care, yet for such a facility to forbid its employees from performing CPR is unheard of. And while such a policy could theoretically be motivated by liability concerns, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/glenwood-gardens-no-cpr-policy-2013-3\"><em>Business Insider<\/em> notes<\/a> that California\u2019s Good Samaritan law would protect Glenwood from a potential lawsuit.<\/p>\n<p>While the episode will spark much debate, and hopefully action, as to what policies and regulations need changing, we can sadly expect our politicians to overlook the looming question of how we let our culture fall so far that something like this becomes thinkable, that someone could put her job over a life.<\/p>\n<p>Upon reflection, we shouldn\u2019t be surprised. When societies decide that life isn\u2019t sacred anymore, such fallout is inevitable. And we\u2019ve been feeding that devaluation for a long time. The death cult surrounding the legal power to kill one\u2019s unborn children is obviously the biggest contributor, but it\u2019s not the only one. It\u2019s also about <a href=\"\/news\/stem-cell-research-the-basics-types-of-research-medical-status-and-ethical-drawbacks\/\">killing embryos for medical experimentation<\/a>. About <a href=\"\/news\/dr-phil-show-advocates-for-mercy-killing-of-people-with-disabilities\/\">rationalizing the elimination of the disabled<\/a>. About <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/opinion\/death-panels-bad-medicine-obamacare-end-of-life-mistake-article-1.149634\">neglecting the elderly out of financial considerations<\/a>. About <a href=\"http:\/\/www.terrisfight.org\/\">withholding sustenance<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/spectator.org\/archives\/2009\/04\/01\/the-doctor-will-kill-you-now\">administering poison<\/a> in the name of \u201cquality of life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Every time society flirts with one of these temptations, some people will naturally infer that their conventional stigmas and inhibitions regarding life and death aren\u2019t immutable after all, and they\u2019ll reshape their moral sensibilities accordingly.
