Not only did she not have an abortion, but her son was born healthy.<\/p>\n<p>The story of the von Trapp family, their musical prowess and how they escaped Nazi Germany is well known, but less well known is the story of how Maria von Trapp refused to abort her tenth child, Johannes, even though the story was published decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>In her book, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, Maria von Trapp details that, shortly after her family moved to the US in the late 1930s, she found out that she was pregnant with her last child. She visited a doctor complaining of severe back pain.<\/p>\n<p>She wrote \u201c\u2018Your wife cannot have another child,\u2019 he informed my husband; \u2018at least, not until the kidneys are back to normal. They are both badly infected \u2026 The child has to be removed, of course, immediately\u2019\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/give.liveaction.org\/general-donation\/?utm_source=lan&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=monthly&amp;utm_content=article\"><b><i>For every dollar given, 34 more people can be reached with the truth about abortion. Will you join us in this life-saving work as a monthly donor today?<\/i><\/b><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>\u201cThe predictions of the doctor proved beautifully wrong\u201d<\/h3>\n<p>Maria was unimpressed with the doctor\u2019s recommendation that she have an abortion and said to him \u201c\u2018What do you mean, of course? That is not of course at all. On the contrary, it is absolutely out of the question\u2014we are Catholics, you know.\u2019 Now the doctor seemed seriously worried. \u2018The child won\u2019t be born alive; this much I can tell you.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the doctor\u2019s insistence, Maria bravely refused to consider ending the life of her unborn son. She writes about when she eventually went into labour: \u201cI had to squeeze [my husband\u2019s] hand very hard, and time seemed to stand still. Then I heard a funny little squeak \u2026 At that minute a full chorale downstairs started: \u2018Now thank we all our God!. Why it\u2019s a boy!\u2019 \u2026 The predictions of the doctor proved beautifully wrong, and Johannes promises to be a fine American boy.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Her son was born healthy<\/h3>\n<p>Later, when Maria learned about the abortion provider\u2019s (Planned Parenthood) notion of an \u2018unwanted child\u2019, she thought of her son\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI must say, Johannes had not been exactly planned for that very moment, and as far as being wanted is concerned, I would have gladly said many times, \u2018Oh, won\u2019t you please be so kind as to wait for just six months?\u2019\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Right To Life UK spokesperson Catherine Robinson said \u201cEven though the story is decades old, it is an important reminder that the need to protect and cherish the life of mothers and their unborn children is always present.
